Grunts' WIP log

Hi everyone! I've decided to start a work in progress log here for the first time as I want to take my painting up a level and this seems the best place to do it. I've just started a Wood Elf army for Warhammer and I decided this was the best time to start.

I've decided to go with an Autumn theme for my army as I like the possible colour palette of oranges, yellows, and warm browns.

The first models I've finished are a couple of dryads. I borrowed inspiration from Arimata's Guerilla Elf army on Asrai.org. I wanted to get some colours that worked well together and directed the eye to certain parts of the model (namely, the face and the sprite). Any suggestions on changes or improvements?

I've also started something a bit ambitious for Treekin as I really hate the GW models. I've never sculpted something from nothing before, but I have to start somewhere so here is my first attempt. There's definate room for improvement, but I was hoping to get some criticism to speed up the learning process. :D

Thanks for checking this out, I look forward to any comments you might have.

Cheers

Those dryads look great, and I'll say that the first thing I noticed was the sprite so if that's your goal you succeeded. I'm not sure how I feel about the blue though (I don't love or hate it...maybe its just how much it sticks out compared to the rest of the model.) I think it works for the eyes since they're smaller than the sprite, but I might have gone for a yellow or green on the sprite though (though you're a MUCH better painter than I so, what do I know? :D)

Wow, long time since I updated. I haven't been at the brush lately, 8th edition Warhammer put me off of painting temporarily but you can't keep a painter down forever! At the moment I'm working on a friend's Great Unclean One which I promised to paint for his birthday...4 years ago... This model is for gaming purposes, but I'm trying to do as good a job on it as I can. Here's a couple quick pics of the model with most of the body finished (skin, pustules, spine, etc.) I feel like something is missing from the skin, can anyone offer some advice?

Last night I finished the blade of the sword (which is the main reason I wanted to update this thread ;) ) I've never painted NMM before, and wasn't trying to on the blade. I was aiming for it to look like bone, but instead it turned out like this:

Frankly, I'm astonished! Never knew I had it in me. I was so happy with how it turned out I had to wake up my girlfriend and show it off.

thanks Savanttheory. only problem is that its pulling the rest of the model down, so I have to figure out some way to improve everything else thats already painted.

yep that sword rocks, congratiolations! :) like said now you have to update the whole miniature (which isnt all that bad either) to that level.
one suggestion is to add red and purple shading to the miniature, it looks great on all kind of greenskins. colourvariation is the shit!

Fantastic idea skel! The color will also off-set the neutral toned sword (the blade anyway) - which is freakin' awesome BTW!

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I added some red washes as SkelletetS suggested to the inside of the "flappy" skin, and late last night, finally finished the bugger. This is the first time I've felt the need to celebrate after finishing a model, so I made homemade belgian waffles (by "I made" what I mean is I kept asking my girlfriend until she gave in and made them). Here he is.

Funny how 'Belgian' Waffles actually don't exist in Belgium. :D

Good job on the Daemon mate, looks ace!

You know, when I posted that I thought to myself "I'll bet someone from Belgium is going to reply that in Belgium, they're just called waffles" ;)

Cheers mate.

lol, well, as a tiny country sometimes we just have to go 'Oi!' to get noticed. :bulgy-eyes:

Wow, long time since I've updated...

Working on getting a vampire army ready for a tournament in February and was looking for some feedback on my vampire hero. I'll admit the NMM silver isn't great (only 2nd attempt really). I'm thinking I'll try NMM gold on the skullcap, swordhilts and shoulderpad. The little teardrop gems on his collar and belt chain will be done red. The cloak is basecoated but still needs highlighting, will be a quite rich red/purple. His cumberbun/belt I am unsure of what colour to do. Perhaps a turquoise to offset the darkness of the model?
