hi there C\'MONers,

i have recently got the bug to have another crack at the first ever army i started to collect in 40K, the ultramarines - if only to try to do them a little more justice than the first time around

the new(ish) pictures of ultramarines in all the GW publications is far darker, and less \"comicky\" than their previous versions which is on of the main attractions but they seem to talk about drybrush techniques which i have been trying to move away from so im stuck and asking for help....

my thoughts are:
black basecoat (which i use for any model i do)
layers of regal blue (for the darker tones)
but thats as far as i can get...

any and all help will be greatly appreciated and any advice given and used i will show on this forum...

please help a poor, confused, painter...

My ultra marine colours are..
Start with A touch of chaos Black in your Basecoat.. not too much but just enough to kill a little of the pigment in the regal Blue.... add first regal blue then add Ultramarines blue sticking purely to the highlight areas ..final sharp highlights can be done by adding Fortress grey to the mix...

Yeah, Black, Regal (Or midnight), UM.

Extreme edge highlights can be done with SW grey, fortress.

Just experiment and see what you think :)
I tended to make my Librarians a lighter blue to differentiate from the regular marines.

Mine ar as follows.

Undercoat Black,
Several coats of a mix of 50/50 Chaos Black/Regal Blue.
Several coats of a mix of 50/50 Regal Blue/Ultramarines Blue.
My current Hilights are done with a mix of 60/40 Ultramarines Blue/Skull White.

I did an Ultramarines Terminator guide a few years ago when the current plastics were released from GW, you can find it here as a reference (Ignoring the last comment about an ink wash, I dont do this any more).

also check out my two minis I have up at the moment. A Razorback and an Assault Sergeant.

Hope this helps.

thanks to all those who have added their techniques/ideas - gonna try and incorporate as much as i can into the models i post here.

thanks also to nels0nmac who was kind enough to add his technique for this terminator which is linked to all ultramarine painters who might also fall in love with this colour scheme:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/183197

his technique is Regal blue base coat. Highlight up using regal blue and ultramarine blue until you are just using UM blue. Then go a few shades lighter mixing in white with the UM blue.

will keep you all posted with my wip\'s and please add any of yours for comparison advice

cheers!

The almighty razza, man he is a awesome painter.

Erm, if i was doing an ultramarine army (and i maybe in the future :)) i would do the 1st company veteran colours, use the white shoulder pad trims and white helmets. Of course they all cant be veteran marines but it would look really good.

Also of the mentioned methods i think demonheralds blue on his models is a really good choice. You managed to get a really nice blue with that mix
