Knowing where you\'re based will help, if you\'re in the UK I doubt you\'ll want to order from Smooth-On in the US...

Threads from pF that might help:

Ideally to prevent bubbles you need to use pressure or vacuum. If you don\'t want to try either then try pouring in a very skinny stream (from up high) which is supposed to help but I don\'t know if it works with all types of resins.

Is it really worth it to make them from scratch?

Dragon-Forge Designs (a CMON member) sells some sweet ones.

well i figured it would be because to by 10 custom bases is can cost 10$ without shipping and thats not counting bases that are for terminator\'s or dreadknought.i need sometyhing like 50 bases.so now we are talking 70$ without shipping.i thought i can sculpt and i have an idea for the bases i want so why not make my own.
allao i am located in us and i know of smooth on.my question is witch resin is the best for getting thhe least bubbles as possible?any help from someone who\'s used resin would be great.and thank you guys for your help so far.:)

I\'ve used the smooth-cast 300 with good results.
Tip: If you make a mold with ureathane rubber, don\'t use a ureathane plastic to cast with - unless you use lots of mold release......(need a rubber paperweight?)

Since my name has been brought up I thought Id throw in my 2 cents.. Quality materials have been mentioned already so I wont get involved there. what I will do is list a few pros and cons of doing them yourself.

Pros.
1. Make your own unique design.
2. save a little money.. Not lots until your casting 100\'s of bases though.
3. satisfaction of doing something on your own.

Cons.
1.Even for small amounts, Expensive. Your looking at about $50-60.00 in material costs to get started. For things like resin, rubber, mold release, mold box materials and so on.

2.. Messy.. trust me Ive ruined more clothes in the last year casting resin than I care to think about. so wear old clothes as you will spill.

3.Time consuming. from sculpting, molding, casting your looking at quite few hours time. Takes me 30+ hours to get a set to market. What is your time worth?

4. Materials have a shelf life, once you open them and start exposing them to air they go bad. For resin 30 days tops especially for your B side. So unless you invest in a Nitrogen Purge..another $15.00 your resin will go bad in 30-45 days or less. Your rubber has a shelf life of 6 months to a year.

5. Unless you have the equipment to Vacuum or pressure cast, expect air bubbles..

6. Clean up and disposal of waste materials.

Anyhoo just thought Id toss my thoughts in. If you have a friend who can make molds and help you then you may have 1/2 the battle over.

I just assumed you cast your bases in the nude.... that\'s how I paint them!

Good luck to the OP on making your own. It\'s gonna be more time consuming and a headache then I personally think it\'s worth, but you will get the satisfaction of making your own.

But that bids me to ask.... why sculpt and mold your bases? Why not just do them the old fashioned way by modeiling them up? For sure cheaper and IMO less time consuming for the 70 bases you\'re after.

But I will throw a cheap plug out for Dragon Forge. quality stuff that I have never regretted using. I am pretty much exclusively using his stuff now, and at a buck to 5 bucks for the biggest ones I have always felt I was getting value for the money.

thanks alot gys and dragon forge ive allways herd good stuff about your work so i love your feedback.see the thing is these will not be for sale at all i have to many other projects goiung on to even try base products.i have sculpted some shield and heads and bases, weapons figures in general and i am tired of doing all the work of sculpting a piece and only having one.it takes lots of time to make a weapon for a10 man squad and time is not on my side seeing as i work 50 hours a week and have a little girl running me crazy.
so i figured if i can save some time and still do what i need to do then great.
dragon forge if i can get you to do some items for me then i might whant to go that route.let me know.thank for your help guys.:D
