Getting back into painting. What paints?

I have been out of painting for almost a year really. I had and liked Reaper Master series but it had quality control issues and not available locally. I was just getting to the point where I was adding and mixing colors for highlights and shades so the triad system is overkill at this time. I dont want so many paints that Im overwhlemed so I was looking at Vallejo Model color, Citadel paints or maybe the new Privateer press line. Any input is appreciated.

If you are getting back into it, then soon you do!

You\'ll have to be a bit more specific. What paints as in what colours, what brand, what sytle?

Answer: A Brush or a Painter. :D

This is an open ended question which has been covered many times.
So let me ask you a question in return;
What will you be painting, Historical, Fantasy, Sci-Fi?
For Historical I would recomend Vallejo Model Colours.
For Fantasy and Sci-Fi still Vallejo but also Reaper Master Series, Privateer Press and of course GW\'s Citadel range. Each is as good as the other and are intermixable.

I wouldn\'t go as far as saying they are each as good as the other, we all seem to have our favorites. They can all produce a great mini but there are minor differences in various lines of paints out there.

BUT it also depends on where you are located. Here, Vellajo products are somewhat more expensive than GW or Reaper. While in Europe the reverse is true.

Airhead\'s right, but I know I am partial to the ones I have gotten used to. I learned with citadel and have compensated for the thickness and consistency to the point where it is now habit: to DR\'s point about the painter. I have tried vallejo and others but can\'t get used to them in spite of the benefits I can see and other peoples appreciation of them.

I use Vallejo model colour, Citadel (no one will ever stop me using bestial brown, snakebite leather and bleached bone!) and P3 paints. I also have a smattering of Vallejo game colour.

Its all personal taste really. I like to basecoat with P3\'s because of the coverage. And then use Vallejos for layering. But there are a few Citadels colours that i find work amazingly, so i use them aswell.

Im also considering the new Foundation paints for the same use of the P3\'s (broaden the colour range)

I think that you could have success with any of those brands, and although I sell vallejo paints, I think that every line has ups and downs, and a mix of them for the colors that you like would be totally acceptable. I still use GW all of the time, and their metallics are awesome imho.

And on a side note, I tried the foundation line out and gave them a serious going over. And I must say that they did up their coverage, but I\'m not convinced that they are any better than vallejo model color. I also hated the bottles (GWs biggest flaw imho)
