That\'s too bad. So many companies closing lately. Where we moved from a year ago is no longer what we left. Heard from friends of all the stores and restaurants that had closed that we used to frequent. But, hopefully, this will strengthen and build up others.

Wow. That\'s too bad. I wonder what else we\'re going to lose along the way. Let\'s hope things get better soon. :(

Man. That sucks.

We sure have lost some really great mini-related companies in the relatively recent past. Sure would love to see that stop.

Here\'s to better times...

We haven\'t \"lost\" Gen Con yet.
It\'s interesting how this thing looks like it\'s going to play out---or potentially play out.

So, Chapter 11 is a \"reorg\"---as opposed to Chapter 7, which is generally just a sell-off.

This allows GenCon to be sold as a \"going concern\", meaning the potential value of the business is greater if it keeps running.

Summarily, this means the potential buyers can purchase the business, pay off the debt, and continue running GenCon as a viable business. Obviously, Peter Atkinson would no longer be involved.

Something else that I find interesting----

The Gen Con Acquisition Group attorneys are apparently in Kentucky---

Other folks that are in Kentucky--
Larry Elmore

*Purely* speculation--but it seems a bit coeenkydental to me that Larry lives in Kentucky, knows a bunch of people associated with this Con---and potentially has the business contacts/resources to pull it off....

Sad that they are filing :( I wanted to go this year. I have only been to Gamesday\'s and I want to go to a convention that is not hundreds of people screaming WAAAGH! all day long. Plus it would be nice to see all of the display minis by all of the mini companies that go :(

EDIT: after reading the other posts it sounds like there may be some hope for The Con which is good to know.

gencon is definitely fun...
i\'m plannin\' on goin\' next year, as who knows if it\'ll be the last...
they have made some odd moves the last few years, and this has been comin\' down the pipe for quite some time now...i think it was over 6 months ago that i got the announcment that they were in trouble...

we\'ll see what happens...i hope elmore can save the day...it is nice to go to a big con, with so much diversity...

cheers

They will just have to go to other painting competitions with equally and more talented painters and try to win without judging friends.

Thanks Mike, As one of the people involved with the group who puts on all the miniature events at Gen Con I find that sort of accusation highly inflammatory and pathetic.

For the rest of you worried that Gen Con will be no longer.. Rest assured there will be a Gen Con Next year and many to follow. Gen Con itself makes bundles of money.. the other events that that corporation owns lost loads..this is just a Legal way for the Company to reorganize its debts and come out stronger as just Gen Con Indy.

I\'m not surprised to see this happen, unfortunately. I used to live about 5 minutes from the GenCon SoCal venue, and a lot of the local gamers didn\'t see the point in going. It was expensive to get in, and expensive to do any of the events even without paying for hotel costs. They had a lot of exhibitors, but you had to pay to get in to see them too. Even when the con started losing money, they refused to move to a non-convention center venue, chosing to close it instead. And this was in the middle of the biggest metropolitan area in the country (and North America, if I\'m not mistaken).

Between business decisions like this and a rather large recession, I find this latest move to be unsurprising. It\'s really a shame, too, because a brand like GenCon should never have trouble making money.

Gen Con So Cal failed because they tried to hold a major Gaming Convention right in the middle of the most major holiday season of the year. It was either close to Thanksgiving or Christmas.

So cal should of been held in February or early March and would of gained much more attendance numbers as people would of been over the holidays any anyone serious from the Midwest and tired of winter would of taken the trip out to California for the con and the weather.

I never had the opportunity to go to SoCal, but based on stuff I\'ve read it also seems like they expected SoCal to be almost as big as the original Gen Con straight out of the gate, when it took the original Gen Con decades to grow to the kind of attendance it had. I think they needed to start a little more modestly and give it a few years to grow in exposure and numbers.

And I definitely agree that running a con close to the holidays couldn\'t help. I spend tons of money on Cons in spring and summer that I could never justify close to the holidays and during the season of higher heating bills.

From discussions on a board game forum I\'m on, it does seem that there is some difference in west coast versus east coast cons, with west coasters accustomed to door fees covering all event costs and the like and east coasters accepting small fees for each event to guarantee your seat.

I\'m hopeful that the new owners will do a great job and keep it the Con I love!

On the topic of the painting contest and miniature events in general... Gen Con is what got me started miniature painting, and I\'ve been participating as a consumer in the contest and events for six Gen Cons now. I\'ve have always considered the painting competition to be a true painter\'s competition. The people who judge are painters. They judge in committees so it\'s not down to one person\'s opinion. Occasionally there\'s a placement that surprises me, but that\'s true of every contest I\'ve ever heard of.

Yeah, sometimes people who know the GC mini event organizers win stuff. Those people happen to be great painters. Sometimes people win who don\'t seem to be part of the mini community at GC, and they\'re great painters, too. As a person, I\'ve always felt a little on the outside looking in of the various mini communities, but I\'ve never felt like my work is treated differently or unfairly in the painting competition.

Okay I\'m confused.

I remember way back when this was announced. It definatley wasn\'t just recently in November. Google....

That\'s what I thought, this happened back in February. It was right around the same time they were sued by Lucasarts.

Did they get out of Chapt 11 and then re-file in November?

It was smack in the middle of Thanksgiving and Xmas. This wasn\'t necessarily bad - I had originally planned on doing some gift shopping at the con, but the cost to browse was too high (in my opinion) to make it worthwhile.

Well dang, I hope they recover as indicated. I\'ve been saying I\'m going to GenCon for dang near 25 years now it seems, and I want to be able to continue to say \"I\'m gonna go to GenCon\" for 25 more years.

Maybe some day I\'ll actually be able to go. :drunk:

There\'s an interesting post on the Gen Con forums of GC\'s official response to this, which is that the buyout offer is a hostile takeover and GC wants to proceed with its current business plan which is meant to have it out of Chapter 11 by Jan.

I think we are seeing too many of these \"hostile takeovers\" in the US right now.

I want to apologize to everyone who was offended by my earlier post. It was a very cruel and inappropriate thing to say so I removed it and will do my best to express more empathetic reason with my future posts. Again, I apologize.

I would normally help with the Gen Con So Cal paint n take, and I loved it. I was so sad to hear when they said that they were not coming back. And know some of the ppl who would Judge the Painting Contest and it was in no way rigged. It was judged on talent and imagination. ... But true it was way expensive to get in. $50 for a pass just to walk around the place. $10 for parking with no re-entry. The majority of the events held you had to pay to participate in. Plus - the hotel rooms for ppl who are not local, meal, blah blah blah. Moving it to a different location not as massive as the Anaheim convention center may have helped? Being nest to Disneyland the hotels are more expensive. SORRY FOR MY RANTINGS. I did like going but only to paint and be around fellow painters.
