Hi all!

I'm Fuentes and I'm new to the hobby. Last time I painted was about 4 years ago, and back then I wasn't very good. After browsing this forum and the rest of the internets for information and techniques I feel that I'm starting to improve but I also would love C&C from all of you talented people.

I picked up the starter paint + tools set from GW as well as some ghosty fellas. I'm only using a GW starter brush atm, although better replacements are on their way in the mail. Still experimenting with different techniques but there's been no opportunity to edge highlight so far since the starter brush really doesn't have a tip. So this is all pretty much dry brushing you see for the highlights.

Welcome. You’ll find lots of helpful people on here!
For the techniques you’re using, it looks pretty good. I’d do another ghosty and see if I could get some more pronounced highlighting, and maybe throw another wash just down into the recesses.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll try to push the highlights on the next one, what parts do you think need more wash in the recesses?

Welcome to the forum and great start. The only thing I don't care dor is the white trailing parts of the shroud. Seems to "white" to me. Maybe try an off white instead...of course it is only an opinion.

Thanks Krule! I agree I've been struggling with the trail parts a lot actually. I'm going to try to push toward a more light grey next time.

Welcome along and great start.

You'll notice a big difference when you get a decent brush etc....my son bought one of these kits and the GW starter brush was bloody awful.

With the tools you have, you look to have made a decent start.

As Toad said some brighter highlights and darker shading would be the next step to bringing these to life more. You could also try some edge highlighting when you get some better brushes...dont worry about the tip for this though as the trick is to use the middle of the flat side of the brush and run it perpendicular to the edge you are highlighting. That way you avoid any slippage with the bristles and get a nice sharp line.

Keep practising and experimenting with your paint consistency and applicationa and post up the results....we will try to help where we can, that is definitely the key to staying motivated and developing IMO.

Thanks for the encouragement and great pointers! Could I make washes of non-wash paints by just adding more water?

Really good tip about using the side of the brush - I'll definitely try that out.

I laid down a basecoat of Citadel's technical paint Nighthaunt Gloom and then gave it quite a heavy wash to give some contrast. Planning to lay down a grey drybrush once this stops being wet and then perhaps I'll attempt a finer edge highlight of lighter grey and white in some carefully selected areas using the technique that Hairster suggested.

Looking good. You’ve already got more depth in the shadows... now try to keep it!
Go slow & light with the dry brush. It’s a whole lot easier to put it on than to take it off!

Thank you, I mixed the wash myself and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Procrastinating over starting the drybrush but will try to get to it tonight - no time to mess up like the present!

Hi Fuentes, welcome to the Forum and to the nice start you did with the nighthaunts.
I'm currently painting as well those guys.
The Citadel Gloom Wash is not recommended - so you did fine to mix it by yourself. The "gloom" effect is not really turning out with that citadell wash.
I've seen it on example minis in the store... but what is turning out really cool is the green one "Hexwraith Flame", if you wanna give your ghosts a green touch.

Regarding undercoating... I'm really sitting between the chairs if black or white is the better choice... I'd say it strongly depends if you wanna have more light or
dark ghosts... I did the chainrasps in white... but I'm tending to do the bladegheists and the others with huge black cloaks in black.

Thank you for the kind comments! I really only used white because last time I was in the hobby I primed in black and this time around I wanted to try something different. Also, the salesperson at GW recommended it for the models. But I've been thinking about experimenting with zenithal priming.

I'm moving onto playing some Kill Team with my mates, so I'm going to paint up some Dark Angels after I'm done with this ghosty fella. Probably going to stick to white primer for the moment for the Dark Angels since I plan to paint them in a Deathwing color scheme.

I would basecoat in mostly white if using the Gloomhost or Hexwraith washes. They don't turn out so great over darker bases (at least mine didn't when I gave it a try). It is as Graishak said they work a better over a white or some other lighter primer/base coat for best effect. It could be that I am still fairly new to this so am just not using them the right way if painted over a darker basecoat.

Thank you all for the kind comments - it really lights my hobby fire! I'm currently in build mode for my Kill Team but I'll get onto the ghosties soon enough again.

OK so some progress was made on the ghost today while the freshly glued marines were drying up. Tried to go light on the drybrush for the cloth and also lay down some base colors and wash for the rest of the mini. The drum looks like a disaster, I think. We'll see what I can do about it with some highlights.

For what it is worth, I think your drum looks really good. Only issue I could possible see is it looks like some of the wash got onto it as it looks like there is a blueish tint there along the lower half of the arm and the drum.
