Hi there,

just started painting WH40k models again after around 20 years of absence from the hobby. This is mainly due to my 13 yr old son who is into it now. He has chosen to do 2nd company Ultramarines, (yes i know very common). I\'m glad that the quality of the kits and paints etc has improved over the years and the space marines look good too, although i have space marines and terminators from around 1988-89 and they look good too.

My main reason for posting is to gather opinions on how people go through the process of painting their miniatures these days. I always used too undercoat with skull white, base coat my colours then ink wash and then highlight then finish off any details. I have made some new models and undercoated with a chaos black spray can. I see in some articles it suggests dry brushing the base colour over the undercoat then highlighting.

Do people still ink wash their models?

Do you paint all thr armour first then do the details like shoulder pad trims etc...?

I would appreciate peoples feedback on their style of painting.

I have put a couple of photo\'s of a mini that is work in progress.

It\'s been primed, basecoated and inked.

Next is to start highlighting, which i usually/used to do by drybrushing.

It looks glossy because of my camera flash but in real life it\'s not glossy.

Hi again.

I have put a couple of photo\'s of a mini that is work in progress.

Arn\'t kids great for bringing you back to your youth. I recentlly got back into painting and such for the same reason (well it was a good excuse anyway, my kids are still a touch young).

What follows are my opinions and may be more relavent than normal because I, like you, painted a long time ago and am back in now.

White primer is somewhat old school now, but the old school is still the best school.

Never leave primer showing. That\'s my primary reason for not priming black, black is the lazy painters primer. Sometimes black primer can be appropriate but for gosh sakes at least paint over it with black paint before going into other techniques where black is to be left showing.

I never did care much for inks, GW used to label them as their \'Advanced Paint Set\' when I always considered them more of a \'Beginner\' thing, but they do have their places and when painting armies can make for some quick washing. Also very useful when glazing.

Drybrushing seems mostly dead now except for fur/hair and other really rough surfaces. Blending and layering are the names of the game now. I still tend to dry-brush a lot mind you because I\'m just so used to it and if I may say so, rather good at it. But even the best drybrushing can\'t match the look of a nice blend job.

Given that your pic is a WIP I think the voting is a bit harsh but then again I\'m not a big fan of posting WIPs up in the gallery as I\'m sure many others arn\'t either (though it is still done quite a bit). Try posting WIPs in the thread here, use Photobucket or something to store the pics online. I suspect you\'ll get more and better responses to it.

If a site like this had existed back in the \'80s I may have made top 100ish but now-a-days the standards are much higher and I\'m not even top half so as far as skill goes I\'m not your best guy to talk to, but if your looking at modernizing then I\'m your man.

Take a browse through the various tutorials on CMoN, there are some great ones in there and well worth a few hours of your time. I try to read one every couple days.
