First Attempt at Inner Fire

This was my first attempt at a creature like this having an inner fire. Overall I think it is coming along nicely but I know there's always room to improve.
I started with a gray primer and then used the brightest yellow I had. I tried my had at orange but it got washed out by the yellow so onto red I went.
Slowly adding browns to the red until it began to look slightly charred. Less and less red until I got to pure browns and then began adding black to the brown.
Once it seemed dark enough I went straight for the black using a dry brush to cover the too most areas.
I still have to touch up a lot and finish the base before I reveal it to him. I'm thinking the base will be covered with small black rocks and no other visual
cues but might toss in piece or two of some broken parts I have laying around.

I'd love to know your thoughts on how it's coming along and don't be shy about critiquing it. There's some really talented painters here.

I would say it is not bad, but the photo doesn't help it. Try taking it a little further back as it is a bit blurry. From looking at it this way though I would say it could use a brighter yellow such as lemon yellow (by Vallejo) or a whitish yellow to help really sell the inner fire and maybe some brightish orange

Not looking bad at all ...for a starting point, patience is the key here ( i think). I'd add maybe the smallest amount of a white or whitish color to the middle of your yellows. beyond that I would glaze some of a lighter color on to the skin near your fire spots, osl style, so to speak. Looks good though, keep at it.

I've never been that great at taking photos, especially from my phone and I agree using a brighter yellow would've helped but hey, we use what we got. I appreciate the critique and will heed your words.

Thanks!

Thanks for the critique. Really appreciated. The lighter color glaze makes sense but I've never been that good at osl style anything. Rather try that on something personal than something for my DM, but he can't paint at all so I guess he could be a great guinea pig. Lol
