Fantasy Sports

Sorry to all the people who came here to read about Badmintennis, Jelly diving and uterus lugeing but this isn\'t actually a thread about fun made up sports (but feel free to put some of your own here anyway)!

Oh no, it\'s about my latest addiction - picking a team of sportsmen with an imaginary amount of cash in an attempt to score points from them, and then spending each weekend cursing that they aren\'t performing as they should.

At the moment I\'m doing the Daily Telegraph Fantasy Football (That\'s soccer for the folks in the States - not the version of football you have where feet touch the ball about 0.001% of the time) and it\'s starting to become way more important in my life than it should!

I have a fixture database filled with all sorts of formulas for calculating prime transfer points for my players, I\'ve become a stats geek, I\'m considereing entering loads of extra teams at six quid a pop to try and win the prizes for manager of the month or week. It\'s become my new obsession and I really didn\'t need another one!

It has also completely changed the way I look at footy. I would never normally cheer a Chelsea goal, but Carvalho is in my team, so yesterday I was cheering like a loon when his header went in.

Are there others here who have the fantasy sports bug, what sport, what sort of style is it, has anyone ever won a big prize doing it (first in the Telegraph gets you a whopping 50 grand!), etc.?

Hmmm sounds like too much work. having never really been into sport I can see the attraction to this type of gambling. may as well put it in the pokies i recon.. Still if you are enjoying it then go for it but if its getting in the way of yoy painting minis then I would stop it immediately.

I get into fantasy baseball when it comes around, but that\'s about it. There\'s a couple places online where it doesn\'t cost anything to play; however, you don\'t win anything other than you can say that your fantasy team won.

I usually get into the heads-up league where points are given based on certain things (how many RBIs, HRs, etc) during the week. For example, if the players on my team have more RBIs than the other team, I get 1 point. Each week you face a new opposing team. At the end of the season, whoever has the most points wins.

I\'ve not even considered it as gambling to be honest, although if I start investing more cash in it to try and win the weekly and monthly prizes I suppose it would be heading that way. My current one entry is more a bit of fun.

As for the pokies, I don\'t do real gambling unless I can weigh the odds in my favour with skill, so poker is the only game I\'ll play.

As for it getting in the way of painting minis, it takes a lot less than this to distract me. Someone clicking their fingers for example!

A couple of years ago my mates family all made up thier own teams and pitted against each other, in a sort of mini tournament. There was about 9 people i think. So i decieded to have ago with a team in thier mini comp. I havnt got a clue about football (just about the only thing i know is that Alan Shearer plays for Newcastle!) So i asked a different mate to make the team up for me! And, (By sheer luck) i won!

I\'m currently in two fantasy (American) football leagues, a fantasy basketball league, only one fantasy hockey league instead of two this year, but am also in a fantasy hockey pool that\'s similar -- having picked certain players out of specified pools before the season began -- but not nearly as fun because you\'re locked into those players all season, with no roster moves to replace injured/non-performing players and no tinkering with weekly/daily lineup adjustments.

I was into Fantasy Football (american football...) for the last few years. I even won the coveted \'travelling trophy\'...

But, I decided to give it up because it was really changing the way I watched football. I\'ve been a lifelong fan, but it was making me root for players I didn\'t want to (to help my \'fantasy\' scores) or root against my favorite players....Plus I was caring less about who WON the game, and more about who got what stats....

I have returned to just watching football and forgot about how much I enjoyed that.

I heard a comedian say that Fantasy Football was \"Dungeons and Dragons for the guys who used to beat up the Dungeons and Dragons players\".

Thats so true!

There is something to be said for a bunch of grown people pretending they \'own\' football players, then trading, arguing, and consorting with other \"OWNERS\"....

And they laugh when I say i have to paint my wolly mammoth!!lol
