I know this sounds a bit silly, but do mini\'s fade over time like other pigments? If they do, can there be anyting done about it? Also, how does paint age on a mini? I want preserve my stuff!

I\'m not sure about paint fading and such, but I guess sealing your mini with sprayed on varnish gives a lot of protection to the outside world...

They do if you leave them in direct sunlight for a long time (like on a window sill). So I guess avoid leaving them in very sunny places.

The main problems I have are with dust settling on them in awkward spots where you can\'t get a duster in and knocks causing chips and cracks in the paintwork. Varnish only protects them to a certain degree.

Well, I\'m using a very strong hobby primer, combined with 2 or 3 layers of matte varnish, and this really is very strong. Even metal minis hitting each other does not damage or chip the paint...

So I guess a good primer is also very important!

years take a toll

:flip:If you dont use a varnish, your paint will definately fade and wear off. No one told me this in 1981, so by the mid nineties I had to do a lot of touching up. A lot of my mini\'s I painted in the nineties are still ok on paint today. I never expose my mini\'s to sunlight but I assume the UV rays would definately fade the paint especially acrylics.

Some sealers have UV protection, which will help keep them from fading. I can\'t recall any brands off the top of my head, but look for a gloss or matte sealer with UVA and UVB protection...

I\'ve seen your stuff, you don\'t want to preserve it. LOL

I\'m just kidding, I didn\'t look at your stuff.

Anyway, all pigments fade to varying degrees. You\'d have to speak with the manufacturer of the paint to find out if the paint is colourfast. I\'ve heard vallejo model colour isn\'t the most colourfast. Then again, it was formulated for models, not wargamers.

I\'d keep miniatures out of sunny areas and consider investing in display boxes to keep the dust off, instead of just on a bare shelf.

There was another thread on this very subject...

I know this is of very little help, but there was another thread within the last 2-3 months on this very subject. I wish I could provide a link, but I just can\'t even begin to remember where it was.

It is there however...which is a start... OK..It\'s a very poor start.

Perhaps one day we might get a search feature in the forums, but Chern Ann does a brilliant job as it is...

Dust

Most of my newer stuff is in a display cabinet, but in a small flat like mine I\'m rapidly running out of room.lol
