Eusi's Staying Motivated and Trying to Improve WIP

Hey all,

So after lurking around the forum for awhile and collecting inspiration from many of you wonderful painters, I've decided to dive in and start my own WIP thread. Partly in hopes of keeping motivated to paint on a regular basis as well as improving my skills.

I've been painting for over 15 years with a few years break in between. Started getting serious about 8 years ago but then college and life happened. Have been back into it for a couple of years now and am hoping to continue getting better. My main interests are in fantasy and historical figures, although I dabble in the odd Sci-Fi mini here and there. I also enjoy scale modeling (armor and naval) so you may see me post an odd model here and there.

As far as my past work, feel free to check out my gallery for what I feel are some of my better pieces.

Anyways, enough rumbling and onto what I am currently working on:

First off from Hidalgo-Beneito Miniatures is a 54mm Royal North British Fusilier. Really nice sculpt and fairly clean cast with minor clean-up and good fit. So far only managed to start the highlights on the red (no shading yet). The pictures are a bit iffy - taken with my phone in non-ideal lighting.

Also working on one of the new GW Orrukks. Being someone who hasn't bought a GW figure in years I really like the new Orrukks, so went ahead and picked up a whole bunch. I am not a gamer but absolutely love the look of these. Pics are a little better on this guy as I am recording a step by step YouTube video on him and needed some pictures for filler. So far got the yellow done.

Comments and critique more than welcome! I have thick skin so lay it on.

Thanks for looking everyone.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

how peculiar interests. It's common to like fantasy and sci-fi but avoid historicals as is vice versa, but liking hist+fantasy while not sci-fi is pretty rare. :)
There is not much scale-modelling here, so I'll wait for pics of that as lately I've tried a few kits (mostly plane and sci-fi from Hasegawa) and they are really a different beast compared to the usual figures we have here.

The 2 models are looking good. Especially as you took black undercoat + red/yellow. 2 colors I find PITA to paint over black.

Comments and critique more than welcome! I have thick skin so lay it on.
You won't have to worry about that. Comments will come and the people are really friedly and supportive, so no thick skin is needed.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments.

@Max - I think the black undercoat is just a result of me being a creature of habit. I've used it since i can remember and learned to paint using it. Most of my base coats I apply via an airbrush so it's much easier to get the right coverage much quicker, even over the black. You sir are a braver man than I am! Planes scare the crap out of me! I've tried my hand at a F-15 and a BF109 so far and both have crashed and burned. Tanks on the other hand are somehow much easier to comprehend. Here is my latest WIP Tiger 131. The tank itself is done, although it is going into a small diorama so have 7 figures waiting to get painted up.

Also please let me know if these pic sizes are ok. I haven't been resizing before uploading to image shack, figure the forum will format, but they are coming out huge on my end. If that's the case for everyone else I'll start re-sizing before I upload.

Thanks everyone.

I like the color, but is coming across as more orange than I would expect for a red coat. Maybe some glazes of red ink to make the red richer?

YAY!! Love that Tiger. We need a great tank modeller around so we can pick your brain for all sorts of useful stuff. :)
Welcome!

You're absolutely right. I wasn't overly happy with how it came out. It's a completely new red recipe I'm using (Scale75 paints) so I may have to tweak it a bit. Normally I'll base coat with Reaper HD Crimson Red and work up to whatever the newest GW blood red equivalent is called. I'm trying to get myself used to the scale75 paints tho as I really like the matte finish and vibrant colors. I'll definitely try some red glazes, if that doesn't do the trick I'll start over. Thanks!

Hi Eusi,

Some very nice updates you have there. Like you, I prefer historical and fantasy models over Sci-Fi. I find it easier to paint cloth and flesh, than robots.

I think your Redcoat is coming along nicely and perhaps some deeper red glazes would help, but I think you have some leeway in the actual colour as dye jobs would likely vary. With the scar on his face, I'd assume he is a veteran so the uniform has likely seen a battle or two and at least a couple washes.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Hi all,

sorry for the lack of updates. Last few days my evenings have been spent trying to finish off a couple of pesky table top quality projects that I won't bother posting here. Hoping to have those sorted by the end of this weekend and get back to the fun stuff. Main reason I'm posting is I have a question for the community, especially those who have entered Crystal Brush. So my fiancé has agreed to a trip to Chicago for CB next year followed by AMPS nationals the following month. So once my current projects are wrapped up I will be focusing mainly on CB and armor builds. My question is regarding the entry rules regarding the historical single and historical squad categories at CB. The rules from this past year read that the single and squad categories has a max scale limit of 1/35 which is around 50mm. 54mm is visibly larger. But I also noticed that a lot of entries into those categories were of 54mm figures. So trying to plan my entries I'd appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this or paint me in the right direction. Thanks!

I believe there is a thread in the general section regarding crystal brush rules from last year. You could also pm the following members that have been pretty active at crystal brush: Blood as Medium, Bailey3, Fluisterwould.

Hi everyone,

Close to a year since my last real update in this log. I finally found a few moments to post some new pics as well as give you a heads up of what my next WIP will be.

First off a few finished figures with vote links:

The Orruk Megaboss. This was a blast to paint, awesome model. GW outdid themselves with these new Orks.

Female Elf Archer from Darksword Miniatures - Great quality figure, blast to paint.

Last but not least - 75mm scale Colonel Joshua Chamberlain from FeR Miniature. Can't enough about how impressed I was by the quality of the sculpt and resin cast. It's an amazing model and was really fun to paint.

Comments and critique most welcome. I still have a lot to learn and would like to improve.

My next project will be this guy:

Almost done with the prep work. I will make it a point to actually update this WIP along the way. First update should come next week at some point.

Thanks everyone!
