Energy Saving Daylight Bulb

Hi all, I picked up one of these today...

cw5buv

...got a load at work so I bought one for myself. Apart from the easy access, the main appeal was that it goes into a standard screwfit socket, which means it'll fit in my ancient Ikea living room lamp that'll only take a max. 60w bulb :) I don't know if they do a bayonet version? It was just over £10 before VAT. Not sure if that's a brilliant price or not but it seemed reasonable to me.

I now have a 150w daylight bulb bounced off the ceiling over my desk :) As you can see, I just mispositioned my halo lamp for the photo above but I hope it'll prove a useful addition for photography as well as general painting (and everyday life).

I've posted because I have this assumption that daylight lamps are pricey specialist things & this seemed an affordable option. Let me know if I've misconceived :D

Cheers, B.

I've been on a crusade with lighting recently. No matter how many new lamps I bought, nowt seemed right. Turned out all I needed was to position them correctly. Although along the way I'd changed every bulb to the energy saving variety. They do seem a bit pricier, but use less energy and last longer so we save money in the end. As a bonus, many of them are describing themselves as "daylight", so we need not feel drawn to those old style blue bulbs. They don't give off much heat either, so can be positioned quite close without discomfort.

Tis a bit confusing which bulbs to go for tough. Have to be quite specific and look at the details. I'd picked up some screwfit bulbs and thought I was getting the right ones with attention paid to the ES and GLS attributes of the fitting, but didn't consider the actual size of the bulbs. Some of the "bulbs" (they ain't all bulb-like, but can be spiralled neon-like affairs) are too wide to fit in the lamp they could be intended for. Have to check the fitting is right, and the bulb size.

In the end I'm relying mostly on a couple of desklamps that use energy saving, daylight, fluorescent tubes. One either side, slighty behind me.

Ten quid for a single bulb is pretty high, but a lot depends on the CRI... although I don't know what the light quality is like I recently saw non-brand CFLs in the US for so little you'd cry!

And yes, they do of course make bayonet versions - with standard lightbulbs recently being discontinued in Europe you'll be seeing a lot more o' these.

Thanks guys, I only really ever see lightbulbs for sale at the supermarket & while they're pretty much all energy savers nowadays, I've never spotted a daylight one. I guess in 8000 usage hours time I'll need to shop around a little more!

Is now a good time to tell people that I picked up 3 on Monday for £4.99 each at Hobbycraft?

:curse!: swine! :D

Just looked up Hobbycraft, I guess I haven't been aware of it because it's one of those big box retail park rather than city centre stores. There does appear to be one a walkable distance from Leeds bus station though. I shall pay a visit later in the year I think. There was a model/hobby shop in the Merrion Centre last time I looked too. Any one local know if there any shops selling figures in Leeds? I asked in Travelling Man, who have a games department but got a rather blank look & was pointed toward a bucket of WotC plastic toys :( Oh, & GW doesn't count!

I guess a lot of people tend to forget about Hobbycraft as they are mostly seen as a retail supermarket rather than a HOBBY /Art store.
BUT, they carry foamboard, Lots of paints, Oils through to and including GW as well as Humbrol Sprays, Airfix kits, Modelling tools, Flames of War and lots of other stuff that fit's into the category of Ooooo Shiney That could come in handy one day!
Yeah I do suspect I have OCS some days......That's Obsessive Collectors Syndrome, especially in store like that.

In case you didn't spot it right off, notice what the price is actually for

Ah, gotcha Einion, but I'd never have considered them, that's just a normal, slightly dim, living room bulb as per the supermarket. Soft White not daylight & only 40w brightness. There have been various schemes where, I believe, UK energy suppliers were given grants to distribute them to households, I've had 2 boxes of 6 bulbs (2 each of three wattages) left on my doorstep in the last year, for free! They do cast the yellower light though. Do "old-fashioned" non-energy saving bulbs still make up the bulk of the shop display in the US or are they just tucked in a corner to clear out old stock?

$1.85 is still really cheap for 4 though!

Cheers, B.

Yeah yeah, but there's four of 'em. For a buck eighty-five. A buck eight-five! :rotfl:

Obviously they're unlikely to be great in terms of CRI - although 'soft white' isn't that specific (but then neither is 'daylight' unfortunately) - but they'd be worth trying for a multi-light setup, maybe around a light tent. Sure beats the pants off the €24 I'd have to fork out for an approximate equivalent here... and that's not including the lamps themselves.

Sweet!

And as you might expect, incandescent bulbs were still predominant on the shelves in the US when I was there at the end of last year.
