Emporer\'s Scythes

After the submission of my first army it was recommended I do a WIP piece for my next army. Last night, I picked up a Space marine Tactical Squad, a warmachine figure for an axe weapon they had, and some chaos black. I was out of primer, and this was the best option available. The axe will substitute the scythe, as it was the closest fit I could find. My first impression were these models felt a lot smaller than my Trollbloods did, but I\'ll get around that.
I busted out 1 guy, and started to clean him up. There is a huge difference between metal and plastics. I was supremely dissapointed with the chaos black paint. It is extremely shiny, and I will have to water it down like crazy on the next model.
Anyways, heres what I want to do:

And what I have so far:

It may look like I missed places, but that is the shine. The head and arms are pinned and can be adjusted to any angle before finishing them. I\'ve also notices the paint on the plastic comes off to the touch, which makes it difficult to maintain a single coat.
Of course, all input is greatly appreciated.

paint makes a bad primer it will flake off very easy and take all your hard work with it if you want black but can not get hold of it, prime if it another colour then use your chaos black that will stop the flaking

Nice to see you went with it in the end :D

Looking at the model I\'d recommend repositioning the left arm as it looks a little like he\'s madly waving his weapons in the air at the moment. Bringing it down into a firing position would add more dynamism to the model and give the movement a focus. Obviously if it\'s only pinned that isn\'t going to pose much of a problem.

If you wanted to make a scythe from what you have, how about removing the axe blade and flipping it round so the sharp edge is pointing downwards like a scythe blade?

I echo what Exile said about paint not making good primer. The undercoat is there for something for the paint to stick to so using paint itself for the undercoat kind of defeats the object.

I like the hand holding the pole handle as it looks bionics which ties in very nicely with the head. Good luck with this matey and I\'m looking forward to how this develops.

Thanks for the input guys! Is there some type of primer that I can pick up at Home depot? If not, I\'ll order some online is a little while or so.

O.K.
I have found some primer. Not the best, but it is what I could find. I have compared two minis together. One with primer, one (the model form previous post) without.
I think the lack of primer gives a lot more definition, but it makes the paint extremely fragile.
Oh, and I totally don\'t think I\'m ready for a color like Yellow. Any suggestions? All input is greatly appreciated; I am not fragile, and just picked up this hobby. I do hope to improve!

I thinned out the black with some water on the model I primed. While, I believe the coating of the non-primed model is better, I believe the yellow worked out better on the primed model. (yellow was not thinned in either). Any recommendations where to locate some retarder, or flow controller?

If you\'re financially strapped I\'d definatly do like freakinacage said and get some car primer - avoid applying a thick coat and you\'ll never go back to regular paint. Another option is using artists Gesso paint, it\'s adherance is better than regular paint but not as good as canned primer.

Yellow is a complete pain unless you know the tricks :) If you paint the piece with thinned Iyanden Darksun (one of the Games Workshop Foundation Paints) you\'ll find that you can then apply yellow onto that and end up with a very nice solid coat. Always thin your paint slightly and use a pallette as well - using it out of a pot will cause the paint to begin to set and you\'ll end up with lumpy bits in it.

Looking good (although your chap with the axe needs shoulder pads)

Pete
