Ebay losing money - surprise?

Check this out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8319657.stm

I\'m wondering if this comes as a surprise to anyone here. I hope this might make them consider changing their policies to be more friendly to the small operations that try to do business there. Personally, I\'m not that interested in using them when I\'m forced to use Paypal, when their normal fees are crazy, when I as a seller have so little leverage in a dispute, and all to take a gamble that someone will buy my stuff in the first place.

Agreed, but what is the alternative? I know soem have suggested other sites, but I don\'t think the traffic there can compete with the volume of hits on eBay.

I\'ll keep using ebay, and paying their fees (sigh.) until an option comes across that has the same amount of traffic.

If you could use CMON to link to any auction site, or private sale site, I think I would go that route rather than eBay.

I used to love Ebay, but they\'re so greedy! My brother and I bought twenty something of those Wii Fits (when they cost 90 in the store and were selling for about 140 on Ebay) and we ended up pretty much just making money for Ebay. With the listing fees, final value fees, paypal fees (which they get because they own paypal), they made about twice as much money as we did (and those were pretty good margins to work with). And they virtually forced us to offer free shipping, otherwise our listings weren\'t anywhere to be found because there were so many pages of Wii Fits. Only the free shipping ones showed up on the first pages.

They have made Ebay very buyer-friendly but they are pretty much raping their sellers and I don\'t list much on ebay anymore. Good luck Craigslist!

Sorry...but to hear someone complain who is trying to \'rape\' consumers doesn\'t quite seem right.

You bought 20 wii fits because why?? To make a profit off of consumers willing to pay more....Which is exactly what Ebay is doing.

To be fair supervike anyone who buys a console in the first few months from ebay or retail store is getting raped, they drop by like £100.

The price goes with the hype and demand.

Can I just correct the title of this thread.

Ebay aren\'t losing money. Their profits have fallen and that\'s a very different thing. This will mainly be down to the recession - items selling for less or not at all etc. Nothing to do with Paypal which the article states has actually grown its part of the business.

I would wager their profits have fallen for a couple of reasons:-

Firstly in the UK the postal dispute will have caused consternation amoungst some sellers who don\'t want to have their items lost in the post or put into storage for a week until it gets sorted by which time the buyer can go through paypal and cause a stink; especially if the item does not warrant the extra money to have it sent registered so it can be tracked ( the only way Paypal will side with the buyer).

The second thing is the raising of the final listing fees for anything under £50 from 5.25% to 10%. Yes they dropped the cost to list, by a few pence wow wee but then you get stiffed by paying double when the item sells.

At the moment Ebay have a near monopoly due to the number of people who use it and act accordingly:cussing::cussing:

Please someone find an alternative that charges a reasonable amount so we can all tell Ebay where to go.

I guess I kind of see what you\'re saying, but ebay is an auction, so I\'m not ripping anyone off if I sell Wii Fits on Ebay, they pay whatever they\'re willing to pay, and whoever wants the Wii Fits right when they come out pay more money to get them (or they camp out like we have in the past).

We did the same thing with PS3s and we camped out from Wednesday night until Friday morning, so I guess any profit we made, we feel like we earned.

Don\'t get me wrong, Ebay is justified in what they\'re doing, they created a service and can charge what they want, and I don\'t have to use it. But they have made it harder and harder for sellers, and that\'s why I don\'t sell much anymore. And I\'ve heard stories about them holding money from sellers on paypal until the buyer gets the item and approves the transaction. It just used to be cheap and easy to sell on ebay and now it\'s gotten to be a ripoff IMO.

They have fallen foul to the same thing as every major corporation out there-greed.

I sell small items over ebay quite regularly and use paypal for my payments but due to there recent fee changes I am losing a substantial part of my final fee in ebay and paypal charges. With ebay charging 10% and paypal charging an additional 3.4% (+£0.20) per transaction it adds up. Ebays almost rigid enforcement of using paypal to pay for items (how long before they make that only way to pay) means you are effectively being charged twice for the same sale (three times if you have paid for the listing as well).

I can understand that they are a business and they provide a service but they are a web host and that is all and most sales are not very well highlighted or easy to find (especially with so many ebay shops keyword spamming everything). If you want to highlight your sale effectively you have to pay more anyway.

So ebay for that £100 sale I just made what did you actualy do to earn your £10 fee? They have a near monopoly on the internet auctionmarket and they are exploiting it to the extreme!

Well, they\'re still raking in millions, so it isn\'t like they\'re going to be shutting done anytime soon. But I don\'t think it\'s that surprising given the state of the world economy right now.

In any case, I have quite a love/hate relationship with ebay myself. As far as minis go, there\'s not too many other places you can sell your old stuff and I think for the most part you get a fair return on your items so long as you don\'t set the selling price too terribly low (I never start an auction at less than half of what I hope to get for the item). However, I have been screwed a couple times myself. Stuff never came, wasn\'t as described, missing pieces, buyer was F-ing nuts, etc. I always reached a satisfactory resolution, and the only thing I lost overall was time, but what really worries me is being locked into Paypal. I know several people who have had their accounts cracked and pilfered, one person I work with just had it happen to her a couple days ago actually... I wish I could just link my account to a credit card like the old days, instead of having to have it linked directly to a bank account.

I also have to say that I agree totally with supervike about jame\'s post. As a buyer, and someone who used to work in retail, it really gets under my skin when I see people buying up all the limited edition stock of something and scalping it on eBay for upwards of triple the cost. I realize we live in a capitalist society, and there\'s nothing wrong with trying to turn a profit, but there\'s a line too.
When I worked in electronics at Target, and the Wii came out, I\'d see it all the time. We\'d get five or six in, and these older people who didn\'t work, or could get time off, would camp out an hour or two before the doors opened on Sundays when we had them on ad. So their friends and them buy up all six, and sell them on eBay, or try to hock them in the parking lot, while I have to tell all the kids and their parents that we\'re sold out.
It sucks, and it ruins everyone\'s day except the guy that could sell them, but even they only use the money to repeat the process again. So imo, you can rationalize it all you want, but complaining that ebay is cutting into your bottom line when you\'re trying to take advantage of people like that is really, really weak man.

We have a great alternative in New Zealand: Trade Me

I guess the fact that NZ is so geographically isolated has helped, but their prices are so much lower than Ebay\'s.

I wish they had an emoticon here for burying my head in my hands and laughing uncontrollably.

Not that I\'m making fun of people - far from it. But my family in Colorado does this exact same thing and I tease them; to find that they aren\'t alone in doing it...I\'d never hear the end of it. lol

Granddad!
Well if you all got your asses over to Games2Trains, then told 10 more people each to come over, and tell them to tell 10 more each..................
..........we'd soon have the traffic :sigh:

I agree even their shipping fees are so high..It's just like paying the same amount as the product you are buying...tsk3x!
