Well I am going to enter this into the Golden Toadstools.

Just a couple of quick pics to start the ball rolling. Not to sure about the drybrushing, I was looking at trying to make it look proper leathery - looks ok I think. Opinions welcome.:D

lookin good. you definately have captured that leathery look, and as primeval said:\"That is very smooth looking for drybrushing.\"

i think the top of the wings is more convincing than the bottom for some reason though...perhaps if you picked out a few of the creases in the recesses. another, probably useless suggestion, would be to add a touch of some other color to the arms of the wings, perhaps a redish brown to make it pop and give it a bit more of a fleshy feel. my two gp\'s.

Do you mean similar to scratches on space marines where the lower edge is lighter?
The arms of the wings aren\'t started yet (the colour on them is just the overflow from the dry brushing) but I am wanting suggestions for the colour of the skin. I can do reddish brown, thanks.

yeah, maybe something like that. though, after looking at the picture more closely i think it may be because of a combination of natural shadows, and more course drybrushing. i really like the effect out near the tips of the wings mind you...its just the darkest parts....

Thanks for that, I\'ve added it to my favourites. I will have to think over how to translate that onto what I have done, but definate poosibilities.

Nah I can\'t get across the ditch this year so I will have to send my entry all alone (if it makes the cut).
I AM going next year. It would be fantastic to meet some CMONers in person (oh er sounds a bit rude! )

Thanks for that. It all helps! I am going for a dark red/brown because I think a brown closer to yours would be to close to the wings colours. But it is good to see it highlighted. Do you have a picture from the back?

Oh and since the Golden toadstools want a write up of what I did I thought I may as well do that here as well.
I prime with a mix I do myself using white primer with black, rust and sap green ink.
For the wings I first built up the shadows using washes of inks.
Rust first off covering the whole of the wing membrane and then every subsequent layer building into the shadow.
Rust and sap green next for deeper shadows.
Then add a bit of blue and again deeper shadows.
Then add GW liche purple for final deepest shadow.
Lots of use of the hair dryer in these stages! ;)

Then a \"wet\" dry brush of snake bite leather on membrane.
Then dry dry brush of snake bite leather on lighter areas of membrane.
Then dry brush of bubonic brown for next highlight.
Then final highlights with dry brush of bleached bone.
