Dragon built from scratch wip (updated)

hi guys
thought id post some wip photos of a dragon im making. hes nowhere near finished yet and im in the process of filing back the milliput and thining down his claws on his forefeet. ive included a high elf priestess as size comparison. it was intended to be the same size as the new games workshop high elf dragon but hes expanded a little since then and is somewhat beefier.
i also need to find a way to base him, any thoughts? currently hes standing on his tail but its not very secure.

now i just need to remember where i put the rest of my milliput. ive got a pack of procreate putty which ive never used before on order too, hopefully it should get here soon.

Looks ace! Are you working from someone\'s picture, or is he your own design? Either way, cool. I love dragons! :)

You could balance him on his tail, you know. If you get the balance right, have a secure fixing point and a heavy enough base, it looks quite good on a dragon. Here are some examples of this from my own experience:

The top two actually belong on a tiddly little plastic base that came with them, and balanced only on the bottom dragon\'s tail. I decided a huge rock was more interesting.

The bottom dragon also came with the teeniest base for his tail (you can see it here), but I refuse to paint him until I\'ve put him on something more satifactory and easier to hold.

thanks for you comment :) im not really working from any design at all, hes just evolving. i was originally trying to make him look like a dragon from the warhammer world but i keep getting so tempted to make him one of the maned and finned dragons of my own design

Do you have a pic? Would be nice to see it for comparison and coolness reasons. :D

By the way, using that mesh as a support for the wings is a great idea. Sculpting dragon wings is something I sometimes puzzle over, trying to come up with a good way of doing it.

heres some of my dragons...though still a little unfinished....as you can see most of them have manes fins and whiskers to rather excessive degrees lol, not sure how id make the whiskers on a mini though.

this isnt a dragon but one id love to make a mini of lol

As am I.

Love those pictures! Do you post on Deviant art at all? The whiskers and manes are gorgeous, but you\'d have a devil of a time sculpting them (and not having them snap off later on). I guess it could be done if you used thin wire as a support and didn\'t mind a bit of a loss of detail.

Your sea serpent reminds me a bit of a Ral Partha one I bid on on fleabay- unfortunately, I didn\'t win it. :(

you could use field grass for the wiskers as it tapers towards the end.
just cut to length and glue into a tiny pre drilled hole.

thanks :D yeah i do post on Deviantart. i go by the username rewston there http://rewston.deviantart.com
the wire and field grass whiskers sound like a good idea, though the field grass might be a little difficult to get to look like they are flowing. i have some extremely fine wire from the inside of a laptop cable which may be useful to make the mane and whiskers though

thanks for all your comments so far :)

Coolness! :) I remember looking at your gallery not so long ago, and being terribly impressed/jealous! That\'s some lovely work you\'ve done there, and I especially enjoy your horse pictures.

finally a bit of an update on this dragon.
ive sculpted the other side of its face and decided to make it look more like the new GW high elf dragon by adding more to the back of the skull.
its had a few bits like the hands carved and sanded down a bit.
Ive also started adding sails like my high elf dragon has and im planning on making it into a small diorama with a high elf sorceress summoning it.

Nigel (Talonicus) used fine fishing line for the whiskers on the Libby & Tiger that he did and that worked very well.

Hehe

I\'ve read it now.

I actually used field grass for the whiskers. much more natural.

But for \"whiskers\" for a dragon like this I would be tempted to use just thin rolled up brown stuff, shaped .

What/who makes these two please???
They\'re Ral Partha\'s \"The Conflict\", and some day I may finish them! I\'ve seen them come up on fleabay a couple of times, but I picked my set up in a store in Mannheim.

Edit: Here\'s a painted version on here.
