Domain registration pirates?

This is quite irritating really. I checked on whois.com and getonline.co.uk only a couple of days ago to see whether the domain name I wanted had been taken.

I went to register it today, only to be directed to a separate site informing me that it has been taken by someone who also happens to own about 500(est) others and for me to have the one I enquired about would now cost around £600.

Not only that, for any the person owns, they also own 4 or 5 of the major extensions to each one.

Seems too much of a coincidence to me that within a day of the enquiry this has happened, more like enquiries are submitted to companies who buy domains which they then sell on for a profit.

I spoke to a friend who designs & registers websites for a living & he\'s seen this happen quite a lot.

So, my advice would be that if you\'re interested in a domain name, don\'t enquire of it\'s availability until you\'re completely ready to register it.

exactly. My first site I had no problem with, but that\'s because I didn\'t check until ready. This time, another story.

Tidoco, there\'ll be plenty of coffee on the go all the time every single day. I can\'t work without the reassuring smell of caffeine around me, just to know it\'s there :D So fill yer boots

You really want to trust a lookup company that seems to be based out of an apartment?

Use Network Solutions or Register.com. Those are much more reputable lookup sites. :)

Sounds like a lot of bull. I never would have thought about someone else registering it before I on the simple premise of looking it up. Obviously must be some money in it though, else they wouldn\'t do it.

Allright, let\'s do a test. I just queried the fake domain name \"cmonrules.com\" on both whois.com and getonline.co.uk.

Let\'s see if it\'s taken tomorrow or not :)

So a site that actually steals your domain names before you can register them is not much worse than a company that\'s served millions of domain names? Just about every company that becomes fairly large ends up with a hate page and \"horror stories.\"

Everything popular and deemed corporate develops a counter-culture, and it\'s often just a vocal minority making a lot of noise on a badly designed webpage.

I don\'t care which you use... I\'m just suspicious of anti-<insert X here> pages since I\'ve seen so many of them fabricate facts.

The bottom line is to use the one you trust, and I think we\'ll all agree that the original ones named in this thread are suspect at this moment. If you can\'t trust a particular company, luckily there are others you can turn. I would recommend the bigger ones over the smaller ones.

As for getonline.co.uk, I, too, put in a search for a fake name. We\'ll see if that\'s taken by Monday. I didn\'t put one in at whois.com, however -- we\'ll see if that helps narrow down which of the two are doing this. :)

PS -- Oh yeah, and good point about it being an office park. The name \"Incity Lofts\" instantly brought in an apartment association, however.

The samething happened to me too. I desigened a webpage for a guy here in Korea. His now ex-wife works with my wife. I did a search to see if the company was available, it was, went back a couple of weeks later, it was gone. I managed to get a similar site. I just dropped the \"s\" from the name. It still worked.

Too bad the guy was nmore into drinking beer than working on his business. :(

24 hours after the first query the domain name is still available...

maybe they pick the \"good sounding\" domain names by hand (that\'ll be a lot cheaper for them)

I\'m going to do another test: query the domain name \"www.cmon-studios.com\"....
