right i want to make a 40k diorama of a duel or a small fight (no more than a couple of figs)

it will have a space marine of some sort (captain or a HQ) and something else?

shall i use this for the base? http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99120199008&orignav=300810

or this?
http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99220199024&orignav=300810

also what could i do for the enemy

i want something cool to work with because all ive ever used is space marines

it can be a boxed set or something so the commander (space marine) will fight off hourdes of tyranids

or it could be one fig

as long as it is fun to work with

THANKS

i think i am going to use the chapel as it is already painted and made so i can get straight on to the models

i will make the models with magnets so i can use the chapel as scenery and/or a diorama

right ive made some decisions

firstly
no chapel- i have a similar terrain piece that the guy at GW GAVE me for no reason

second
its going to be a fight between a commander with a lightning claw and some sort of cool weapon (plasma pistol?!)
the enemy

im making some mutant imperial guard from the cadian shock troops sprue (im using 10 men) thats £12 ($24 dollars approx)
http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99380105002&orignav=10
and im combining them with some chaos mutant things that my friend will provide for a small fee or possibly nothing

yes thats all i got so far

ANYONE KNOW OF AN OURSTRETCHED RIGHT ARM THAT I CAN PUT A PLASMA PISTOL ON!?!?!? (all the right arms seem to be bent at the elbow!)

THANKS (if someone actually replies )

I don\'t really play 40K so not that up on the models.

For me a diorama needs to be a frozen story that can convey the feeling the models would be feeling at that point. I am not experienced at diorama making but I would centre the piece around an emotion and get the models to try to convey that.

However you do it though I would imagine there will need to be some converting of the models to bring them to life as a lot of GW models tend to look quite static to me.

If you are able to I would also spend some time on making the scenery personal to your particular diorama. Maybe ask questions where is the Space Marine Commander? Why is he there? etc and build a story for yourself to draw inspiration from.

It would be good to see it as it develops in the WIP section.

Sorry I couldn\'t be more specific in my help with the models but I think you are the best one to decide as you know what feeling you are trying to create and can search the net for models that capture that.

While this is an excellent forum, you can\'t expect replies all that fast. Give it a day or two at least. Most posters don\'t check the forums more than once a day.

Personally I\'m not fond of the chapel ruins. The glass always looks off for some reason. It\'s really hard to get it to look good, it seems. I\'ve seen a couple very nice ones, but it\'s rare. So it makes me a bit sad that you\'re going with a chapel ruin of some sort. Although, can\'t beat the price of free!

I was going to say I really like the sanctum imperialis idea. When you said you were going to go with a box of mutant guard I had a vision of the marine standing in the doorway, fighting for his life, lightning claw slashing or gutting some evil doer who got too close, plasma pistol firing down, into the sanctum at the oncomming horde of gribblies. But unbeknownst to him, 2 or 3 are climbing up the walls beside/under the balcony! Tentacled arms grasping above, pulling them up to the window ledge/balcony. Suggesting some higher brain power leading their actions, since mutants dont flank...do they?...dun dun dunnnnn...

Anyway, surrounded and about to be ambushed from behind sounds fun to do. I\'m sure the idea can be adapted to the terrain you\'re using. Last thing I\'d say, is diorama\'s where the models have bases just look...not as good as they could, so you said you were going to magnetize the models so you could use them to play and use the scenery, so i\'d suggest magnetizing the model to the models base and then also the model without the base to the scenery. If that is what you planned, then good plan! Otherwise give it a think or two. I think it\'d be worth the few minutes of extra work.

G\'luck, I hope to see some pics.

firstly... thats EXACTLY what i was thinking

(you creep me out how you know what im thinking lol)

secondly
\"When you said you were going to go with a box of mutant guard I had a vision of the marine standing in the doorway, fighting for his life, lightning claw slashing or gutting some evil doer who got too close, plasma pistol firing down\"

THATS EXACTLY WHAT IM THINKING..... plasma pistol and lightning claw (or two lightning claws)

also the chapel has no stained glass and i think will suit what im thinking (mutants jumping over ruined pillars etc)

THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU!

Firstly, this is your project - we can only provide opinions on your work - it\'s not up to us what you do :D lol

Secondly, we don\'t know your level of converting/painting ability or confidence, so if we suggest you scratch-sculpt a daemon prince it might put you off :D

Give us some WIP shots in the WIP forum once you start :)

The story is kind of like this

The battle: Space Marines allied with imperial guard against chaos marines.

The commander has just had his army (and the imperial guard) wiped out and he is the only survivor (or thinks he is)

He has taken shelter in a chapel and has been there a few days and there has been no sign of any allies

He sees some imperial guard (shock troops) in the distance and they look fairly normal.

As they get closer, they start mutating (this gives me idea of a couple not attacking but just standing back and mutating)

Some attack him and he has a desperate fight for his life

will he prevail?

right thats the story

when i start posting pictures and such....

BEAR IN MIND 2 THINGS

im not that brilliant at painting (although i will try)
Im not very familiar with greenstuff or whatever but i will give it a go

HOWEVER

i will be happy for you to give C + C as long as it is helpful

THANKS

I like the plasma pistol and lightning claw idea………………..BUT!!!1! How about the claws are broken off at the knuckles, embedded through a mutants fugly face, pinning him off his feet to the wall, right underneath the stained glass figure of the Emperor!@1???1!!!one! All while still bludgeoning the sweet love out of any mutant who staggers close enough of course!

p.s. if you do use lightning claws you have to have flayed corpses slopped about!!! you have too!!

p.p.s good idea cant wait for the pictures!!

The big problem is you are an unknown. We have no idea how long you\'ve been painting. What your age is (it matters to some extent - I have a guess, but I\'d hate to say and be wrong.) Where you are located (it also matter due to some products that are available in the US vs. EU). What level of painting you are capable of. What level of mods you are capable of.

Your story sounds interesting (I don\'t know or play GW so it really means very little to me).

Is this for GW\'s Games Day comp? If so, you need to read the rules carefully as not to disqualify your diarama by showing it here.

I\'m sorry we cannot be much more help. This is Cool Mini or Not, not Cool Backstory/Idea or Not. Show us pics and we can help. The proof is going to be if we can see that backstory in the diarama without you having to do a write up.

THE TROOPER

what a GREAT idea about the broken lightning claw!!! i am going to make 10 mutants so one or two can be dead, a couple around the commander, some scrambling over debris to get to the commander, and a few who are only just being mutanised and are starting to change into zombie things

THANKS

Use a photo editor, (most PCs have a default one - whatever you use to view?)
resize!
Or just put \'em in Paint or Paintshop, and \"stretch/skew\" them smaller percentages until they are the size you\'d like.

Diorama

Hi: I like to create Dioramas too. I find that it helps a lot if one can think of a fantasy story first around which the diorama can be created. It helps to fix ideas and to decide details and to finalize the whole look. Hope this is useful.
