Digital pinhole photography

evil tendencies

Cake or Death?
That's cool. Pinhole photography was my favorite part of my photo class in high school.

Just curious, what applications are you going to use it for?

I'm not going to be able to do it sadly as I don't have a digital SLR. But definitely looking forward to try it out of 'art photos' when I do get one.

utter madness!
It's fun throwing away the past 150 years of technological advances in photography*, honest :cute:

*Well, most of them - this is for digital after all.

Funny this should come out.....rather proud of myself on this one. I was in a store the other day and some of the writing on the stickers was VERY tiny. Without my reading glasses I couldn't even guess what was on there. The thought crossed my mind that people will often squint when they can't see clearly -doesn't seem to make any difference. Next thought was 'hmmm....squinting, aperture closing.........tiny aperture......pinhole camera, hmmm, naw, no way, it couldn't work. Kind of like making the OK sign but real tight, I made a tiny hole with that gesture, looked through and holey smokers if I couldn't read the micro print!!:rotfl::jump::claply:

yeah! Sometimes at night, in bed, if I'm watching a late show or something...if print comes on I can't read it, so I make a little pinhole gesture as well, and viola, Instant Correction lenses!

To be honest, digital pinhole loses much of the attraction for me. This is far more fun:

I bought one of these for peanuts:

Only managed to run one film through it (another one sat in it waiting to go), but you can get some really gnarly lo-fi pics:

Quite the opposite for me!

On a practical front, most people can't process their own film, which just kills the idea stone dead for anyone who likes the type of photo this produces and wants to give it a shot. Doing it digitally has opened up a whole new realm, quite apart from being able to take shot after shot without a dark bag you get to see the results as you go. Just no comparison IMO... much like digital photography generally.

Holy Cow that brings back some memories.
I might still have one up in the attic.
Gnarly isn't a word I would have associated with it though.
Clumsy and awkward more like it? :D

Both of these comments miss the point somewhat. People use these sort of cameras because they produce unique results and are fun to use:

Well I wouldn't have called the Lubitel fun to use, however the result YOU have produced are striking.

However I hope you'll allow me the point that someone wanting to make tentative steps towards using a larger format could be seriously dissapointed in the Lubitel.
If I hadn't been Gifted the Rollicord I doubt I'd have gone any further with 6x6. However the marked difference in quality of performance and made TLR photography a bit more accessible to me.

Bearing in mind that you have a serious visual skill Scott I do feel justified in saying that I'm sure you could get great series of shots out of a 1910 Kodak pocket camera. Not that I'm giving you ideas here.

Yeah, I guess it depends on what you call fun - you're right that the Lubitel isn't a particularly easy camera to use. I guess most of the fun comes from not knowing exactly what you're going to get. :D

If you want quality and ease of use, digital is easily the way to go. I only really use film at the other end of the spectrum these days in El Cheapo crap cameras that leak light and have rubbish lenses. Expired and fast film only!
