I\'ve been collecting and playing 40k for about 6 years... and it\'s getting dull now; was alays told fantasy is about more \"grown up\" if thats the right terms.

so i\'m taking the plunge, but am stuck narrowing down to 1 army ???

I\'ve got 3 in mind but all seem to have good and bad things about them, either Vampire Counts, Lizardmen or Wood Elves.

any pointers????

VC- They got a really overpowered book. COnsidered WAY too powerful by most players. You can make an army that\'s fun AND competitive for you and your opponent but in general the book is pretty overgunned.

WE-I hate all things elvish, and these are no exception. If you are tired of 40 then I\'d stay away from these guys as this army seems to be most succesful when played JUST LIKE a 40k army. Usually no nig blocks of infantry, lots of skirmishers and stuff.

LIZARDS- New book due out immediately so who knows? I could never get into their \"alien race\" style fluff, and when I did play them I found them sort of lame, as I couldn\'t get my head into the story of my own army.

There\'s just one mans review. I personally play O&G, Dwarfs, Nurgley Demons (The MOST overpowered army book in the game currently) just for a reference. I\'d worry about ranking your criteria by

1) Painting
2) Fun to play
3) Winning

If you enjoy painting the most and are not to fussy about 2 and 3 then find a box of RnF mini\'s you wanna paint and see if you enjoy painting them. If you do, get at \'er!

Warhammer is a very fun game. I dislike the way 40k plays and I think you\'ll be pleased with the different system. Good luck, and post pics when you start!

Fancied getting a wood elves army but didn\'t like the new models. They all seemed to be stood on branches or tree trunks. i\'m a bit of a purist and it just felt odd taking them onto the battlefield with huge hulking bits of wood in tow.

Couldn\'t pick between the others as they\'re both so different and I\'ve got both.
Vampire counts give you tons of variety in painting them which can be a bonus when you\'re churning out figures. Also you can make tons of cool scenery for Vamps, plus there\'s the cool vampire mythology...

Lizardmen, whilst a bit samey to paint, have some great new figs coming out and I love the new plastic Stegs and will be picking up the new Kroxigors.

Damn, decisions, decisions.
Tell you what, get both :D

i just like the idea of a massive horde of zombies with some hard hitting vamp units... but theres no decent lord mini i feel. other then the winged dude, but hes not exactly my taste.

just for the mini\'s im really really feeling chaos.... that and the blood god has been calling me for years now :D but every1 i know locally collects chaos ¬_¬

so im stumped... and with the churning out mini\'s in the same colours... thats 1 thing im not great at... short attention span lol

Oh, so you\'re throwing other armies into the mix now are you lol

Here are respective merits and downsides of armies I\'ve collected (already mentioned vamps and Lizardmen)

High Elves; Fantastic character figs, don\'t need to paint boatloads of rank and file, good diversity (ie Lion Chariots, dragons etc), great if you like painting white!

Dark Elves - Evil!, Great characters, again, don\'t need loads of figs, diversity of choice.

Orcs and Goblins - Personally think some of best figures around. Hilarious to use; diverse choice of units and weaponry; great if you like green; usually have to paint a ton of \'em.

Skaven - Really characterful, very different to use; nice range of figs; Very samey and need a lot (and I mean a lot)

Beasts of Chaos - Great choice of figs and great models. Good mix of rank and file and character; again, need quite a lot.

To be honest, you\'re going to end up painting a load of figures anyway, so I reckon the best thing to do is pick the army you\'d enjoy painting the most with the figures you best like the look of. It makes it easier to stay motivated and more fun to use on the battlefield.

If you don\'t like painting \"samey\" minis why not try Bretonnians? You can paint every model in your army with a different set of heraldry. The infantry (if you bother with any) will need to follow the same colour scheme, probably that of your general. Then again you could have each unit contributed by a different knight and paint them in the same colours as your unit champions or something.

this is all very much personal opinion but: buy an army you want to paint, look at and spend time on, not one you want for winings sake. To my mind, there are many far cheaper games that require less effort if you\'re playing for the sake of wining.
