Death of Holloween....so sad

Well it is Oct 31st here in the states. Time for kids to dress up and go trick-or-treating. I will say this, it sure isn\'t like it was when I was a kid.

I mean the window of time the kids have is only from 5-7 and I have yet so see a kid on my street (and for the record I live in an area filled with kids). Now I am still a kid at heart but I do not see kids filled with the urge to go door to door.

I used to make loads of money when i was a kid trick or treating! Used to love it! Bought a cheap mask (to maximise profit) and went out for about 4-5 hours every night for the entire week! lol

Well it\'s never been as big a deal over here as your side of the pond but I gotta say I\'m pretty glad it\'s over now...

The problem round here is it\'s an excuse for the ASBO kids to don a bit of face paint and a bin liner and knock o your door and throw fireworks in the garden of people who don\'t give em anything or just give them sweets..
I had a couple of interesting and annoying and slightly spooky things happen tonight..

firstly had some knob throw a banger in the garden that scared the crap out of my little un..not happy ..Then we had a power cut so the street was in darkness..(A rarity in this city) that gave me and the next door neighbour great cover to get revenge on the pratts that try to spoil it for everyone...They got a few nasty surprises..
still had the obligitary bag of sweets for the nippers with their families.....

one thing for certain as soon as my little un is old enough to go I will be joining in with him as there was a great amount of yummy mummy witches around tonight...:innocent:

Oh well time to start building the punji traps for mischievous night..

When I was a kid it was still very popular to go trick-or-treating.............LOVED IT. I feel fortunate. It wasnt too long after that it all tailed off, everyone got scared of razorblades in apples and poisoned candy. I now wonder if that was all just like aligatore in the sewers - urban legend that everyone swore was true. It\'s really sad, a bit of fear, real or imagined can spoil the fun. The ones that I dont like are the older teenagers that go trick-or-treating.....just seems like it should be for the wee ones.

Left the post office about a half hour ago and a little girl who was about 2-3 was dressed up as a chicken!! ADORABLE!!

The trick-or-treaters around here stopped dressing up. They\'d just show up in their regular clothes, act incredibly rude, and expect candy. It became so bad that everyone on our street turns all their lights out and no longer gives out candy at all.

Here in this little Nebraska town, kids still dress up and go out. A couple people even set up haunted houses in their garages and most houses are decorated.

My daughter had the idea to go as a half human/half vampire that\'s decomposing; turned out pretty nice. If my camera was working I\'d have pictures.

Some places people really get into it and some places don\'t.

As far as the razor blades in apples and poisoned candy goes, it\'s all urban myths. In fact, I remember reading that the only cases of kids dying from poisoned candy was because their parents gave it to them.

you get to know where the other kids in the neighborhood live. so i make sure my kid only goes where there are parents with kids.

more of a candy relocation program than anything. but the kids get excited about it. i never did when i was a kid though. it\'s an american thing though.

We had a couple of hundred kids in our neighborhood turnout. I went with my two youngest. My oldest went with his friends. I don\'t mind the teenagers as long as they actually dress-up and aren\'t rude. Most of our revelers were little tykes though. Great fun all around. We had a couple of haunted houses and \"scare-the-kids\" traps. Lots of adults out with their kids kept the funny business down to a minimum.

you beat me to it. I think I read the same article. The author did a study of something like 20 years worth of newspapers from every major city in the United States (on the theory that if a child is poisoned/razored on Halloween, it would make the news) and found absolutely no case of trick-or-treaters getting tainted candy from strangers.

In my state this year they sent out a letter to every registered sex offender asking them not to give out candy, not to turn on their porch light, and not to answer the door.
TV news ran stories to make sure everyone knew where they could find the sex-offender list.
Guess they\'ve got to give the parents something to be afraid of on Halloween.

We have the same situation with a multitude of teenagers walking around without costumes filling pillowcases with candy. At first I assumed that they were from the public assistance housing near to my neighborhood and couldn\'t afford a costume, but almost without exception they are dressed quite nicely (read: expensive) and at least one in the group (they move in 3\'s or 4\'s typically) will be talking on a cell phone. Unlike other reports here, they are all quite polite and personable. So why not at least make the effort to look costumed? I don\'t get it. In any case, I save the good stuff for the costumed kids. :)

Must say that I love halloween, espically now that I have young kids. The children get really excited about trick-or-treating, as much as Christmas, sometimes even more so it seems. Any day, commercial or not, that gets children happy and excited is OK in my book.

My mother-in-law said last night that she turns out her lights once the kids showing up are old enough that they are smoking while trick-or-treating.

The french just don\'t get it I suppose, but then again they tend to be so anti-anythingnotfrench that it isn\'t surprising.
