Hi TaurenMoo, congrats on the win at the comp :good:

Not much to say on the painting really, for 3 evenings work it looks fine. Upping the score involves spending more time I reckon & if this was quite enough for you, thank you very much, then just work on practising the new techniques you've played with. Should make for a very nice army.

Presentation: No single image shows me the entire piece, including the whole of the base. Keep your pinkies out of shot! Blutak can be handy there.

Looking at your posted work, this is your most accomplished piece so far (it's not just got a higher score 'cos it's a SM I'm sure), very ambitious. Keep plugging away at it. If you want detailed feedback as you progress I suggest starting a WIP thread here on the Forum & checking out the other work there. They have sharp eyes & won't let sloppiness slide :) It's a neat way of getting advice on a mini as you go rather than once it's done.

Cheers, B.

Thanks for the Reply... I am working on a number of things and I don't have all my pieces up here on CoolMini... Probably should. To give you some other examples of where I sit (and for the total view of the miniature here you go):

My current work involves custom sculpting/converting an entire "Horde" Army. Currently I am working on spirit wolves and finding a proper head for "Horde" Orcs. Couple Pics of current work on that:

Hopefully that gives you an idea of where I sit...
I'm specifically looking for thoughts on the basing, the small amount of NMM I used (mainly the golds and the silver on the spiked helm), the flames and the general layering on the armor. I tried to pull off the technique for black armor shown on brushthralls and I think I accomplished it but it looks unrealistic in certain places maybe a little to much light in certain spots. The OSL was my first attempt so I kept it very subdued... hopefully it didn't look to bad.

The sculpting work on the flames and on the wolves above is where I am right now, I enjoy sculpting and I am beginning to learn to split, clump and detail fur as the greenstuff cures. Hopefully practice and patience will leave me to bigger and better things.

I tried to really step it up and try new things beyond the norm... Sorry for the fingers, pictures were taken in not the best light at the game store. I'll try to get more when I get the miniature back from display.

one thing i really think you should work on is the lettering on the 'medallinons' or seals or what its called, it look pretty much rushed. otherwise it's a really nice paintjob.

Mmmm not so much rushed but I was unsure how to go about it. Any thoughts or direction on how to go about doing lettering on seals/small writing in general?

I think it helps to picture in your head what you are trying to achieve first, I always tried to make scrolls and seals look like old manuscript. I found it worked well if I used brown or chestnut ink instead of black paint. Take a really fine brush and maybe water the ink a little until when you paint the "writing" it looks like very faded script.
With a little practice you can even do an illuminated script effect trying to replicate something like this: http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/librarian/rpc/manchesterpres/slide18.jpg (obviously with much less detail!)

I saw and clicked away that marine multiple times during voting. My reason not to vote: The pictures. The lighting isn't very well and always only parts of the mini are shown in various rather small images.
The gray seams to be cool, but its hard to tell. The red surely misses shading and highlighting (including the crystals).
Also I don't like when people write names for a miniature on the base, because:
1) Thats kind of geek/freaky
2) The letters are mostly sloppy (I am painting runes, so I know its really damn hard to get them straight, but still...)
3) If that fellow is killed in battle, next time he's back from the dead!?
4) It looks odd on the battle field
So overall the mini is fine (as I said especially the gray seams to be cool), but has some very disturbing parts on it which make it hard to give an overall rating. And as you see, to write such a comment would blast bejond the input you can write in a comment ;)

One thing I did find very hard was writing... In general you use a detailer small round brush for that right? Multiple layers due to the lack of paint the brush can hold to clean up the text?
