Death and Alternate Realities

Ok.....bit deep...so whats this all about

Alternates Realities - I was watching a programme on Discovery about this, and I'm a big believer in fate and alternate universes

Death - I hate flying and have just been to Greece I always get a bit morbid and wonder if this will be my last flight.

Then I got thinking...there are a number of beliefs about death:

Going to Heaven or Hell
Being Re-incarnated
Turning into a higher being (starwars like)

I thought possibley another which involved alternate realities.......in this you both die and don't die. Let me explain.

As we know alternate realities is that for every thing that happens, in another universe the alternatives happen (e.g. If I turn left in one universe, in another I will turn right)

This is how my theory works:

To yourself you don't die.......whilst to others you do die (only in the universe where you did)

"So you are driving along at night and a big truck is coming down the other side of the road" both time lines are running parrallel.

"In one universe the truck loses control and crashes into your car killing you. "
In my theory you never know this because you automatically continue in the universe where it didn't hit you.

So effectively you never die, you just keep switching to the universe where you never died.

The only part I haven't got a theory for is old age.....but effetively everyone always lives to an old age. Just in our universe they die......but the person that died to them have never died they are just carrying on as normal in another universe.

Thoughts??

I will hit the re-incarnate part of your death theory.
A lot of people will have a personal death dream that is only dreamt when they run a very high fever. Its always the same dream last for 10 seconds or so then they wake up. Some people don't remember theirs or maybe their last death was peaceful not sure.
Anyway my death/fever dream is a bit odd. I am being covered in sand like a dust storm then large wheels or rocks roll over me when I wake up. Can't help but think that I was killed in the African campaign of ww2 or I was some egyption slave casualty of a building accident.

You forgot the most obvious possibility regarding death. You die, you're dead.

That's the philosophy I personally subscribe to:)

So, you switch to a reality where you didn't die, but, what happens to the other you already in that reality? That presumes a connection between realities, and a kind of soul or energy to transfer. Not sure of the maths involved in connecting through realities, but a person being a more than flesh and bone starts getting a bit spiritual and weird.

Stilll, it's no more wacky than the all the high fantasy religious reincarnation, heaven/hell stuff eh.

Never cared much for alternate reality stuffs myself. There would have to be billions and billions of new ones created every second. One for alternative actions of each person, animal, leaf, gust of wind etc.
I missed a comma there, in another reality maybe I didn't, my computer didn't freeze up but alternatively it could have, a leaf fell from a tree while in an alternative reality it didn't, next doors dog barked but elsewhere it didn't. That's just four new realities in one second for just a few metres.

When I die, the machine that my body and brain is will have ceased to function. That's it. Though I shall cease to exist, those that remember me, and anything I've created shall continue to mark my existence as having occured.
And despite theists regarding that empty and sadly, it's really not, it's an amazing thing to behold. All the evolution, the sequences of events, the ancestors, all adding up to the birth of a distinct person. And the life that each person lives. Amazing. :)

I think all realities would have to be connected, there isn't another you there's just "you" living simutaniously in billions of realitied. You just continue living the other reality as if it's the only one. There's no switching as such......you die, but then again you don't die. In theory no one ever dies. Suicide would be futile, because you would just continue living in the reality where you didn't succeed with the suicude.

I haven't tought it through fully just something that I pondered on for a while. Like I said I don't know how old age would fit in.

Stilll, it's no more wacky than the all the high fantasy religious reincarnation, heaven/hell stuff eh.

I'm not sure what I believe personally. This version would be good, but I'm more higher plain stuff. I'm more re-incarnation, close your eyes open them again and different person.

I'm a big believer in time travel as well, and I think you can't believe in the one without the other.

i kinda believe in God. a Christian one, so yeah hopefully I go to heaven. i don't see another reality or what not, but in all actuality, we never really die becasue matter can never be destroyed. So I guess we just keep goin? Who knows. I'm just happy to be alive.

I subscribe to that as well...Isn't is Nihilistic Digest?

Nihilistic is not believing in anything without hard proof.

Something that I also believe.....I keep an open mind though. I'm not religious in the slightest. As the "unexplained mysteries" site that I also frequent everyday.....there's some things that I can't explain, and alternate realities is theoretically possible according to science, and something I believe is being explored although on the fringes, so is looking for ET.

Nihilism has a negative and pessimistic aspect that I totally reject.

Life is wonderful, life is amazing. Life ends...
Death is also wonderful and amazing.

This is one of those 'opinions are like arseholes' debates though..:D

What you mean if you go there.........you apologise to the lady and say it slipped. ;)

The 'Oops' excuse? :D

That must be a record......we've gone from alternate realities and the meaning of death to accidental anal sex in a mere 10 posts:D

If I die fighting I'm going to a place with never ending drinks, gorgeous women all around and barfights all over! :D

Besides, I'm immortal until proven otherwise. :p

I subscribe to this belief.

I dunno, i've almost kicked ye rusty bucket a few times now, can't say it was unpleasant tbh. Well ok, the circumstances were, the feeling wasn't though. Went from utterly bolloxed to perfect clarity in a heartbeat, never felt better. Much as I know about that side of it, clearly I haven't died yet and therefore, am probably immortal. The bit I grudged was waking up and feeling like shit.
There's a bigger thing than this existence though, that much I do know for sure without delving into details.

Don't particularly care if people believe that or not really. That's the sum of my knowing and your finding out =D Sucks to be you guys!

Huh! Care to clarify what you mean by "A lot of people"?
I've a had a couple of very high fevers and this is the first I've heard of this.

Yep me too.[/QUOTE]

On the contrary Jim, if anything its more comforting to know that all the cant and hypocrisy means nothing, and its what you do here and now that matters.
The primary ethos that christianity is based around, also know as the golden rule ie treating everyone equally, is sound and as a principle to live towards is a fine aim.

The concepts of heaven, hell, sin and redemption are all about mind control and fear tactics for mass control of a populace, nothing more.
