Dasyatis : improved or not ?

After having painted a dasyatis from Rackham, I partially repainted it according to comments, and now I\'m not sure it got better.
So I\'d like to know your opinion, and have any possible advice. :)

Welcome to the forums, Ysilne!

I think both minis have been painted extremely well. I am guessing the comments were to take the highlights up a notch. I think the second mini\'s sword you improved upon very well, it appears much more reflective. The highlighting of the skin is a bit excessive (if that was your goal). He now looks white/pale gray instead of the medium gray from the earlier pic. I think the highlighting has overcome the base color. Does that make sense?

Hope this helps,
Jabber

Both are very nice, but I think the second one looks a bit better. I gave the first an 8 and the second a 9. I can\'t believe you repainted a finished piece that looked that good!!

The second one looks better hats off for taking advice it is darn hard to do... but has its rewards, in the long run, do not lose yourself but,.. learning is good,,,,

To be honest I prefer the first one. The redone job isn\'t any worse, but I think that the darker tones just work better and add a real presence to him.

It looks like you have gone a little too heavy with your extra highlights and it has overcome the nice moody shading on the initial job. You\'ve certainly not made it any worse, but you have changed the feel of the miniature a bit and it doesn\'t work for me as much.

For real improvement I think that the extra levels could have done with being a bit more minimal and issolated. This would have retained the impact of the initial shading and added a final punch to the highlights.

Still a great job. 8s for both from me.

What she said :D Some of the highlights were a bit flat/subtle on the first version, especially the muscles and the sword NMM. I do think it was improved by your repaint.

Ok, thanks for comments everyone. Next time my highlights will be a compromise of both I guess. This doesn\'t mean I\'ll repaint it once more, finished for this mini, but since I have the other Dasyatis mini... :)

I think the second one does look a bit better. It seems to be cleaner, crisper, and highlighted better.
