Dark Angel Veteran Sergeant Betor

Betor was able to hand off the standard to a new astartes and grabbed his storm bolter to lead the charge!

Took many comments and suggestions and implemented several to the point I think I was just down to grinding gears! ;)

I am still learning new techniques and really enjoy everyones assistance and comments. This is such a great place to talk shop with several like minded folks. All in all this is number 4 of my painted minis to actually get the matte spray.

Overall a solid mini. But I don\'t like the pose at all, it looks unnatural. Another thing you can think of is not using direct flash when photographing as it often kills the details etc. So some of my criticism might be partly due to the picture.

Some parts look really neat with straight and thin lines.. especially the sword is impressive! But other parts might need a intermediary shade, especially the cloth. If I\'d do a cloth like that... I\'d start with the mid tone. Mix in a little shade and make very thin glazes in the recesses, or shaded areas (if you use a lightsource) Then I\'ll do another one and concentrate it towards the places where it would be darkest. remember also that shadows loose saturation.. so it\'s often a good idea to introduce a bit of grey in shadows if you\'re not after any specific effect. After I\'ve done the shading I would work upwards from the midtone and highlight the points facing upwards the most.

If transitions starts to show, mix the new highlighting colour with a bit of midtone (you need a palette for this if you haven\'t already as it speeds up the process) and then glaze the transitions. Use the side of your brush and another trick is to move the brush in different directions so that a line isn\'t automatically formed. For example, if I\'d do a fold that goes horisontally I don\'t necessarily paint up and down. I can for example move the brush in a vertical motion lightly touching the fold as well as using very thin paint and dragging the drop of paint where I want it. But here we come into the realms of feathering that is another subject you can write an essay about! :)

Anothering thing you can think of is outlining the eyes more and separate the area more from the surrounding. You can either paint the eye black and leave a line while highligting up or paint the eye red, make a wash and repaint the eye again but leaving some wash showing.

A thin I really like is that the colours of this mini are balanced out. the red of the gun is balanced somewhat with the red of the purity seals ( you could have made something red on the sword though) The white with blue shading is introduced on several places. Often that is an \"something is wrong but I can\'t quite say what it is\" area that is overlooked. I\'m not entirely sure on the blue shading on the white though. Maybe you could just have gone with a brown or grey shading?

Anyway... again solid work. Sorry for the amount of text but I\'m on an airport waiting for my flight! :)

Seriously, thanks for the comments.

I want to say that the flash does leech out a lot of the midtones and I am working on setting up a more studio like corner for taking pictures of the minis.

I also picked up the foundation set of colors from GW and currently working on trying out several new layering techniques with the new colors.

I have a business trip coming up and will be away from my paint for the next few months. So, I will have to post up some new stuff after the holidays.
