Here are a couple of pics of my latest endeavor Reaper DH 3036: Dantrag, Northman. I picked this one up a while back, mainly due to the pose.

Well, I messed that up completely. Sorry for the overly large second pic. I meant to preview the post and instead I posted it. Anyhow, I chose this mini mainly for the pose. My initial thoughts on this one were earthy colors and try out NMM. I tried to choose a color scheme that would look right in the desert, however, after I started painting I realized he was supposed to be a Northerner (oh well).

If you don\'t mind, could I please get some comments on the skin. There are many great examples of skin on this sight, but for the life of me I cannot begin to try and re-create any of them. The base color is Bestial Brown, highlighted with base color + bronze flesh up to pure bronze flesh, then a touch of elf flesh to take away the jaundice look.

Also, I am having trouble realizing how to work the NMM onto the bolts of the knee and shoulder pads and also on the belt and shoulder pad strapps. The plating on the gloves will probably be bronze, and the hilts on all of the weapons (dagger in hand, dagger in boot, and sword) will all be done using gold NMM.

The hair will be black (I have yet to highlight it), I am not sure about the pouches, and the base will probably be just simple sand. I may add a skull and some helmets, but it will just be a simple base.

Thanks,

Richard

Looking pretty good so far, but the skin is a bit rough. The basecoat/shade is showing on the top surfaces in places like the abs and the contrast between the shading and highlight seems a bit abrupt. Try to even that out a bit and the tone itself is nice, it will look awesome.

The leather parts look really good. I look forward to seeing him come along - we can never have too many barbarians! :D

Not much to add as primevil is the expert on barbarians. He seems pretty \'armless to me tho.

I think the nips need to be toned down abit as well.

Kevin,

Below is what I have done so far. I actually applied two light glazes of the mid-tone. It still needs to be cleaned up, but am I on the right track?

Thanks,

Richard

MUCH better!!! That looks great, nice rich tone and smoother. Just needs the highest areas re-highlighted. Might want to clean up that area around the eye too, but he is looking great! Can\'t wait to see more!

Thats looking pretty good. The picture size obviously shows the flaws far more than what they probably are in real life.

I think a bit of black lining near the leather strap and the other items on his chest would help that pop out more.

Thanks for the comments. Do I need to bring the skin tone back up to Elf Flesh, or can I just do the final highlight with a touch of just pure Bronze Flesh? I am constantly worried about going to far with the highlights.

@Primeval: the glaze technique really does the trick. I started working on the new GW Giant following the steps in one of the recent White Dwarf magazines. I got around to the shading and it just looked like poo. Just as you stated earlier, the change between the shading and the highlighting was just too abrubt. Now I have something new that I can apply to all of my future minis and those that I am not happy with that I have already done. Your advice is very much appreciated.

@supervike: here\'s a stupid question: Does the black lining have to be pure black? The reason I ask is that I was trying to keep this mini as earthy as possible, the black won\'t detract from the earth tones? I hope that makes sense.

I would do just the pure Bronze Flesh, maybe you can lighten it with the Elf Flesh if you are not happy with that result.

No, it surely doesn\'t have to be pure black at all. I like to use scorched brown (gw color) for my \'black lining\'. Still gives you an earthy look, but helps defines things too.

Dantrag is almost done. I am trying NMM for the first time, and I am not sure how it is going so far. The right arm is only attached with tacky for the time being. I need to finish the sword, and I would rather have the arm off to do this work.

Here are the pics:
