Da Bruvverhood of Steal (Need help on my Ork 40k WIP!)

One caveat before I start: While I\'m marginally experienced with painting (you can check out my CMON page if you want), I am more or less a total 40K newb. So, to prevent falling flat on my face during this project, I am requesting the help and comments of the wonderful minds at CMON.

Pardon the looong post.

Theme:

Waaagh, waaagh never changes.
I\'m planning to do a post-apocalyptic 40k ork army, entitled \'Da Bruvverhood of Steal\'. This, of course, will be loosely based off of Fallout 3. The story is that they found a \'Vault\' filled with \'all dem dakky mekky bits\' and went insane. Of course, they will also be led by the \'Vault Dweller\'.

Both are postapocalyptic and junky, so what\'s not to like?

Generally the troops are going to be wasteland raiders (lots of rust and browns, as per orks and fallout3\'s general palette), with some elites in power armor in the grey/metal of the brotherhood of steel. There may be some \'enclave\' armor with glowy bits, but this might be limited to the Meks or something. The kans will be scratchbuilt to look like the protectrons/sentrybots/Mr handys, but dreds, trukks, battlewagons, etc will just be normal ork vehicles or modded from something else.

Thoughts and Problems:

1) Ork Klan and colour scheme/theme.
Of course, there will be lots of browns and rusty silvers, but what accent colour should I use? I\'m tempted between Evil Sunz, and Deathskulls. Red is a color which I love, but the Deathskulls would be more \'accurate\', being thieving gits. Bad moonz is also a possibility; I\'ve been interested in painting yellow and they have a lot of techy bits as well. But where should the accent colours go?

I\'m using Lemmingspawns method of speed painting the grunts, but I would like to find a way of making them slightly more \'attention-grabbing\', maybe like highlighting the metals up and splashing blood on all the choppas. Any other ideas?

I\'m painting up the 1st group of orks now, so hopefully I have something to show in a day or so.

2) Leaders
One idea is to make all unit leaders vault dwellers; that is give them all the dark blue vault suit. However, this means may clash with the rest of the army\'s main colour schemes. A second idea is to mod a pip-boy onto each leader\'s hand or powerklaw. What\'s a better option?

3) Too much green?
Orcs are green; the pipboy is green; and most of the military issue items (robots, rippers etc) are green. How should I remedy this situation, or is the difference in hue of the greens sufficient?

4) Power armor
I think the sculpt with the closest match for power armor are the black orks from WHFB. However, they are much smaller then mega-armor nobz, while mega-armor nobz totally don\'t have the \'brotherhood of steel\' look. Any options?

5) Robots
I have NO IDEA how I\'m going to scratchbuilt them robots. Halp!

Feel free to post any additional ideas/comments!

first of all, great idea. would love to see the end product.

second, being new to 40K, and/or orks, i\'d really check out the-waaagh, it\'s got loads of gaming and modelling stuff

now, onto your dilemma\'s:

1) spot color and clan:
do whatever you think looks best. your building a themed army, the ork klans are themed armies which GW has thought out for us. forget about those and do what you like.

if you\'re really puzzled about the spot color, paint some units first, leaving out the spot color. see what color would fit best, and paint that onto every model in the army.

2) leaders
I like the idea of the pip-boys, maybe give them all a \"fist shaped\" PK, with an integrated pip-boy.

Also, I\'d model the leaders wearing Armored Vault jumpsuits. in the original dark blue, but reinforced with rusty metal bits, and a good brown wash, to tie them in with the rest of the army (i don\'t reckon those jumpsuits to see many Washing machines, I\'ve played the game, and haven\'t seen one)

I\'d keep the 101 visible on the back if i were you. that would make it really clear it\'s fallout themed

3) too much green
i don\'t think you\'ll be overwhelmed with all the green you\'ll see.

I\'d made the army-issue stuff more brown than green. the last army elements died out some 200 years ago. they won\'t have kept they\'re stuff clean all that time.

remember, only the pip-boy screen is green, the rest is black, metallic.

4) Power armor
I\'d personally make the power armor by rounding out and shaving the normal ork MAN\'s. shaving off most of the corners and sculpting some more segments on shouldn\'t be too tough.

5) robots
for the robots, i\'d check out the waaagh, and maybe post this thread there as well. some of those guys are just genius.

some more points :D

6) vehicles
I\'d think some more about including any vehicles larger than a trukk or a Kan. I haven\'t seen anything working with wheels in the game. nearest thing i saw were some old army trukk that looked salvageable. I\'d stick too converting ork trukks to resemble those military trukks.

7) scratch built weapons
be sure to include some scratch build weapons on your nobs and meks, something like the Rock-it-launcer, and the railway rifle.

8) grotz
have you thought about using grotz?
Maybe you could take some humans, with slave collars to represent grotz.

I do hope i javen\'t made your live any harder than it already was :(

and show us some mini\'s

Sounds awesome, Orks is one army I never got the chance to play when I was a 40K guy. And Fallout has great ambience, lends itself really well to the theme.

Spot color is entirely going to rest on your eye, since it\'s your army... bear in mind that a scavenging/thieving army won\'t necessarily conform to the \"standard\" color schemes, they will be using whatever is on hand, so any good complement color to the armor will work.

Pipboys are a must! Again, the color of the cases can be changed by the acquiring army, just keep the screens bright neon green and all is well. I also like the idea of the Vault Dweller suits for the leaders, I would keep the bright blue myself, what I know of Orky logic suggests that the vibrant color clash would appeal to them :)

As far as green goes, remember that most modern military kit is green for both cost effectiveness and camo purposes, expecting action in rural/jungle settings. There\'s plenty of sand/desert gear and arctic camo, so feel free to adapt your armor to the surroundings you picture them in, no reason not to have black/brown/red lava theme for a blasted/exploded terrain.

Vehicles/weapons/robots - Orks are a fun army to scratchbuild for, let your imagination run wild since you\'re using foreign source parts as a base to add to the existing Ork tek.

Can\'t wait to see pics, especially WIP stuff, good luck!

Love the idea of the fallout based army. Great game with some immense imagery.

Just to add to what has been said, Big Mek with a FAT BOY would rock. Also weapons wise i would stick to the weaponry they use on the game, knives, bats, swords, batons and of course power fists :p

I would also model a good few models with the vault jumpsuit, you can add some variety with having some on fully others rolled down \'grease monkey\' style. Maybe have another bunch to represent the gang their and maybe have the nobs as vault security.

So much background info etc. By any chance do you have the collectors edition fallout3?the one with the artbook?that wouldgive u a lot of ideas.

Wow. Even more ideas! My head is spinning with all the things I need to do now. Both a good and bad thing.

I think I\'ll have a mix of Deathskulls/Bad Moonz... the Deathskulls can have the looted falloutey 3 stuff while the Bad Moonz can have the more 40K orkey stuff. At the very least the blue and yellow will still be in the \'vault jumpsuit\' theme, and that gives me some freedom to do non-fallout 3 stuff. I really just want to try modding.

Of course, that means I need to paint over some of the red accent colours I had on my orks. Good thing I haven\'t gone very far on those yet.

Uber: I lurk on the-waaagh... ;) Actually I think I spent the last weekend or two systematically reading through the entire Mek\'s blooprints... and I have to say you and suki\'s and ein\'s work just blow me away.

Mourner: Oh no! Now I REALLY need to make a Fatboy SAG. Great ideas, I really need to start working on them.

that would be a great and easy conversion, I think I\'d make it a gretchin Bobblehead though, ork sized would be too big.

Just take a gretchin and attach the head to the body via a small spring or guitar wire.
Maybe mounted on top of a trukk or something....

If you really wanted to make one I\'d suggest doing it with the body from the ogre lookout gnoblar and a normal ork head.
