Curious about painting insignia

I was wondering how many people out there paint there own insignia on models instead of using decals. I am talking mainly about the GW space marines and the like. I just started painting insignia and right now my marines have all different sizes of insignia. Although they all do not match I would rather do that anyday than deal with those flimsy decals. Just wondering what the consensus was.

Yep i don\'t think i have used a transfer since i was about 14. Lets just say it was a looooooong time ago. Ultramarines for example i found that sculpting the chapter icon is quite easy to do......(Mmmmmm i\'m thinking an artical when i get time) The squad markings i paint depending on if someone wants the metal ones or not (which aren\'t very good IMHO) all in all, i avoid decals like the plague.

freehand for me, although I\'m just starting at it, it gives a lot of satisfaction when you get it to look good. :D

I tried making and casting \"Salamander\" Space marine shoulder pads. Made a perfect one but it wouldn\'t cast properly, so ended up painting the insignia instead.

Lets say I didn\'t do many before I got cheesed off. Now I\'m considering what chapter to paint that already comes with buyable pre-moulded Shoulder pads.

It\'s each to their own I guess. I prefer painting as I can weather them and als do part insignia as they pass under cloth etc.

Some people like to outline with a pencil before painting. I prefer to paint the outline with a thin brush. Both help keep things pretty consistent, which is the main problem painting and repainting insignia on squads. Mickc22, those are actually pretty consistent for freehand, you did quite well IMO.

Whenever possible I tend to base insignia over decals. For the Mentor Legion Marine I painted recently however, I had to freehand it since no decals were available.

I was going to suggest what Kep just said lol Use the decals as a guide. It\'s not really cheaing, it\'s improving and stylizing...;)

NO DECALS!!!

No decals for me! It\'s difficult to stick them on round surfaces (like shoulderpads) and the worst: They are glossy! The whole mini is dull but the insignia is glossy... great! :|~
Try to paint some insignias on paper and try to always paint them alike. With my Cadians I always start with the dot in the middle, then paint a straight line ontop, then the rest of the triangle and last the two bars left and right from the middle-dot.
With each step compare the size of the object with your other minis. If one part of the insignia has a different size, try to adjust it. It\'s a little bit time consuming, but I rather have some different \"freehand\" insignias than simple decals... ;)

I don\'t do the official stuff, but all of my space marines have a rampant lion drinking from a cup on the shoulderpad and a sheef of barley and a keg on the left leg.
All freehand, though I am thinking of trying to print decals - I\'m just not sure I can get the same level of detail from my printer.
