Crowd sourcing our FAQ

Only when they're green
Ok, our FAQ is super dated, so please submit your questions and answers to this thread and we'll consider them for inclusion. Stuff like how to post an image, where to find stuff in general etc would probably be necessary, but I can't think of everything.

Most likely once the site design is firm we'll do a series of screencasts to cover major usage issues too!

Do I have to register to post an image to the gallery?
How do I register?
How do I get a custom avatar?
How do I change my signature?
What's the maximum size for a signature graphic?*
How do I post images to my gallery?
What's the best way to get feedback on my work?
Do I have to register to post in the forums?
How do I add images to a post in the forums?
I see these red numbers under some posts, like 252/8100, what does that mean?
How do I see my ranking?
I have images in my gallery but I don't have a ranking, what's wrong?
How do I look for a specific thread?
How do I report a problem post?
How do I look for a specific mini in the gallery?
How do I find a specific member's gallery?
Who do I contact if I have a problem with an order from the shop?

*A few current ones are over the size specified in the User CP; with changes to the site layout in line with the higher screen resolutions, any plans to revise this upwards?

Sorry, couldn't resist....

Who do I contact if I have a sudden urge to start another thread about ranking?

On a more serious note:

What are the voting rules?
How many votes do I need before my submission will be counted toward my ranking?
How is ranking calculated?
Who are registered voters and what is the difference between "registered voters" and "supporters"?

A short guide to BB code with examples. Would have saved me a bunch of google yesterday. Simple stuff _after_ you've seen examples relevant to your interest.

A FAQ including Site, Forums, Articles, Blogs and the Shop would be helpful all the way around. For example the FAQ for articles just uses the Vbulletin FAQ and it covers stuff not available to normal users, only to admins. That can be seriously confusing.

As to actual questions -

Do I have to pay to register?
What are the benefits of Premium?
What are the picture size limitations?
What is a montage and do I need one?
How do I advertise my auction?

Policies on hotlinking, using your own images/copyright, and sniping are always helpful too.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

What do the numbers on the rating scale represent, I.E. how well painted should a "5" be versus a "10," etc. I remember this being actually written on the voting scale before, but it is gone now. I was under the impression that "5" was "table top" quality, but I seem to see lots of stuff that is nicer than table top get worse than 5 pretty consistently.

Updated the FAQ a little, will be adding a section on bbcode shortly. I'm thinking of maybe chucking out the static page and going for a full blown mini-wiki...

As a new user I am currently struggling with 2 questions:

How long will my recently uploaded picture have the status "waiting"
How do I constact support? (going to search a little more for this by myself though)

the site lost its footer in the new layout which we're adding back in, but you can contact us on the forum Contact Us link at the bottom of each forum page (or close to the bottom). Pics are moderated every week day by our moderators so you unless you post on the weekend you should be up and running within 24 hours. Your direct link will work no matter what in any event, it just won't be listed in the galleries.

Still no information in the FAQ on what the different ratings mean.

The rating system is incredibly subjective as it is, but its useless if some people are calling 5 good tabletop and other people are calling 5 bad tabletop.

Well technically the different ratings mean anything you want them to mean.

Imagine they were very precisely defined, what difference would that actually make (to you, to anyone)? It wouldn't affect the way that the scores were handed out by most people. Plus of course it wouldn't have any effect on the scores of older entries... except perhaps to cast doubts on how they'd been scored.
