Critique Request

Hey Guys and Gals,

I\'ve been lurking around these parts for a little while now, trying to get familiar with the forum and adding the occassional post here and there.

Thought it was about time I submitted something of my own with a request for critique (and general comments if you\'re so inclined) for those of you kind enough to take a look.

I\'ve been painting for just over two years now and feel that this is one of my best pieces to date, it does of course pale in comparison with some of the work I see on here though.

The submission itself is currently in waiting mode but should be up shortly, I can\'t remember if you can view the submission while it\'s in waiting if you havea direct link or not so I\'ll add it now anyway. Hopefully it should work fine.

Cheers,
Julie

Thanks for making me feel welcome guys, it\'s a big forum with a lot of established posters, it can be a little intimidating at times.

I hear what your saying about the photos, I\'ve recently bought and set up some new lights and have been experimenting with them. These are the best photos I\'ve ever taken of a mini, period. My photography is something I\'m working hard on this year.

I\'m glad you all like her, she\'s such a lovely mini!

I pretty much mostly only use Reaper Master paints these days, with a few citadels that I can\'t live without, also got the Rackham paints on their way, can\'t wait to give thsoe a go too!

Anyway, the colours I used for the skin where a base coat of 50/50 Ashen Blue and Pure white (ashen blue is a lovely soft blue with the tiniest hint of green and grey in it), then I added the shaing with very thinned down Bruise Purple. A selective wash using the base colour around the endges of the shading to help soften the edges.

Added some more white to the blue so it was around 25/75 (blue to white), and then used very thin pure white over the top of that for a few layers to build up the rest of the highlights.

Again, thanks for the votes and the comments, I really do appreciate it all.

Welcome! Great mini...
Don\'t have much to comment on. If I were to nitpick (and it took me quite a while to come up with something), the water looked a bit flat to me and I might suggest a bit more shading on the back of the hair.

Feel free to ignore me--you already paint WAY better than me. :)

With talent like that you have no need to feel intimidated. Very well done.

Voted and commented. Welcome aboard. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Hi Julie, don\'t worry too much about people around this place, you manage to put up with me and nearly everyone is way nicer than me here :)

I like this one, I agree about the photo though. I bet you can fix this photo up with a few little tweeks in levels.

And feel free to be intimidated, I know I am too! Just don\'t let it stop you from using the site to share, learn and improve! :)

Thanks guys.

Yeah, the water is a real problem at the moment, I can fix that though. I used a water effects product and filled the base to the brim, only once dry it has a shrinkage rate of like 95%, I\'m really annoyed about that but it\'s a lesson well learned. The cloth didn\'t come out as well as I would have liked either. Something to continue working on.

Hahaha Eric, I\'ve seen you in a skirt and lippy, never again will I be intimidated by you!

If I knew how to tweak my photo levels properly I probably would, all I know how to do in photoshop at the moment is crop and resize! LOL I am working on that though, I have a couple of books on digital photography and photoshop for digital photographers so I should be able to sort out lighting levels with that soon enough.

Learning is why I\'m here, I\'m always keen to try and learn something new, experimentation is the key to improvement. Well, that and patience!

Having seen your website ( I\'ve got a habit of looking at people\'s painting websites!), the next question is are you better than your boyfriend yet? I bet he\'d be well cheesed off if you are lol

Nice work for such a short period of learning - just shows how quickly apprenticing gives results.

Can we see some of your fella\'s work now too? lol

hahah I\'ll see what I can do about some of his work, he\'s a bit shy about showing it off online though.

Hmmm am I better than him yet? Yes and no. I\'m very much a single model painter while he is very much an army painter. I think we are both fairly good at what we do we just have different skill sets.

We both entered Golden Demon for the first time recently, he entered mostly to shut me up cause I pestered him heaps. Our GD has three seperate rounds held on three seperate days, we both made it to the regionals but unfortunatly that\'s as far as he got. I got 4 out of my 5 entries into the finals and came away with a Bronze (which I am totally thrilled about!). Better luck for both of us next time.

So now I might have a Bronze Demon (which is nothing to some people) but he has won several awards at Grand Tournaments for best painted armies which is something I\'m never likley to get. Like I said, different skills.

Wait  You llived through THAT and you find US intimidating ???lol??? Remember, Eric is an important and well liked member of this community. That being true, how on earth can any of us be intimidating ???:D
Glad you overcame the intimidation, though. That mini\'s a beautiful piece of work. In think the only thinkg youi might want to be cautious about is coming within a hammer\'s reach of Dragonsreach :D You might end up with flattened fingers!

you know, if I had know how often this would come up, I probably would have thought twice before posting it... it was more than a year ago now I believe!

I can be intimidating too! you should have seen me this halloween.

but really, no reason to be intimidated here, promise! :)

Trew, we\'re all good folk here. Well done on the bronze - great stuff. Tell yer fella to put some stuff up anyway - don\'t see anywhere near enough decent armies on the site.

Ok Eric. What about posting pictures of this year\'s halloween? That might stop us bringing up the previous year. But only if they\'re good photos!!! :)
