Hi,

thought I'd start a project log, to put up WIP shots of mini's as I go along.

quite new to painting mini's properly so am hoping to pick up some tips as I go along.

The first WIP I would like to share is George. This is a Goblin by Scibor and I must say it as been an absolute joy to paint so far.

Any way heres a couple of shots:

Not too much more to do, just the shield and other clothes really.

I was going to touch up the blending on the flesh but the finnish started to get chalky so I decided to leave it as it is.

Could do with finding how to prevent the chalkiness because it seems to happen allot.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Also any other advice/comments at this stage will be appreciated.

Anyway cheers for looking. hopefully I will have some progress to show again soon.

Hi Coyotebreaks and welcome to the madhouse.

He's looking pretty good mate. I can suggest two things to try and combat chalkiness. The first is to thin your highlight colour more. It looks like you thin your paints pretty well already. The second is that you may need to add another couple of steps between your mid tone and highlight colours as you work up.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for looking and for the compliments.

@Stewsayer, I think it must be option two. My paints are propper thinned down. I have gone back to my pallet and reckon I could squeeze a couple more shades inbetween. Thanks for the advice I will give it a try.

Cheers.

Well since my last/first post not made a massive amount of progress. I recently moved house so went through a period of mot much painting. Which was a bit rubbish. (nice new house though so not all bad).

I have managed to get back into painting and have made some progress over the last couple of weeks.

I went the Gollum painting master class over the weekend also. this was an excellent day. I learned so much stuff.

As soon as I got home I wanted to practice the techniques I learned so have done the boots using the two brush blending technique and my first go at NMM (not counting at the lesson of course)

so yeah heres some picks (apologies for quality, decent photo set up is next on the list I promise)

So yeah any comments and criticisms will be greatly received and very much appreciated.

I can definately see myself sticking with the 2 brush blending, its so much faster than my old way. I have very little painting time so it fills me with enthusiasm that I might complete more then 3 models a year.

Needed to have a break from the goblin. So started another model this weekend. I have decided that I want to work more on practising 2 brush blending so for this model I will be 2 brush blending all of it if I can.

I am also trying to get better at contrast and general tidiness. So yeah heres a couple of pics:

Slight update from yesterday. Treid to smooth out the blending a bit more on the robe:

I think I'm starting to get my head round the two brush technique, but still seem to struggle at the general global lighting placement, I seem to be going back and forth allot.

I'm going move onto the other sections next. Just need to think of decent colour.

Thanks Krulebear, they colours have come out better then i thought, just hope I can make the right choice next.

I'm thinking blue green tones on some other details. Not sure yet though might wimp out and go red brown.

So, Ive been away from the painting thing for a while, but managed to get back into it. Have been working on this ranger to ease myself back in.

Have tried a newish technique for me on the flesh using warm and cold washes to add some life and interest.

so yeah any comments and critiques will be appreciated.

A bit sleep and a photo has given me a bit more objectivity, I have just had another look at the above photoes they have shown me that my blending on his armour is not as smooth as I first thought. So tat needs fixing, i'm not sure either if I need to go much lighter with highlightst? (I can never tell.)

A small update from yesterday, did some work on some his scarf and gaters.

I found the blending really difficult. Its a very small area and quite complicated in shape so I was finding it hard to work out what to do. Also evrything is in shadow so ws struggling to know what bits needed to be light. Very arckward place as well. Still progress is progress I suppose.

Photos are massive! You need to save them at about 200mm high at 72dpi in photoshop per pict.

Yes, sorry about that completly forgot that moble photo's would need resizing, thats early morning posting for you I suppose. I will make sure I use my camera in future and resize before posting.

Blending looks good :)

Thanks for the comment.

Going to move onto the cloak next, hopfully that will help me get a handle on things before getting to lost in the details.
