Conversions vs "Counts As"

So after reading the tournament rules, I am very pleased to see that the rules for conversions are very lax and allow for a great deal of artistic interpretation.

My question is what about using models from outside the WoK range? Confrontation, which I believe had a lot of the same artists as WoK, has a great range of models that could "count as" any number of models in the game. I know in casual play anything goes, so long as your opponent approves, but what about in a tournament game? As long as the model resembles the one it is replacing, is that legal, or is that up to the TO to decide?

It is unusual that there is no mention of basing the conversion on a Wrath of Kings model. It would seem as though it would be at the TO's discretion to allow or not allow models from other ranges. I did see an interview with one of the creators where he mentioned using other models as proxies but I would assume he meant that for games at home. Also a lot of the art for Wrath of Kings was done by Eduoard Guiton one of my all time favorite artists. Guiton did many of the concepts for Confrontation. http://www.edouardguiton.com check out his website for lots of Wrath of Kings goodies

Mmm...I can't be sure since that's probably TO fiat, but if it wasn't obvious in any event I ran exactly what the model was supposed to be I'd probably disallow it just to keep everything simple.

Not sure how relevant this is, but it sure isn't Tourney legal: an entire faction conversion from the Dirz (Scorpion) faction from Confrontation 4.

I did it for my own use, just to see what the addition of actual ranged troops will do to the WoK universe. Also in the process of adapting the Aarklash fluff to that of Arikania.

Currently, I think they're too overpowered, and I need some playtests to tone them down a bit.

Really, the reason why ranged attacks are so rare is because they ignore a good portion of the defense grid for a decent amount of models (except Ashmen, which are awesome). Honestly, having a ranged faction like Cygnar in Warmachine would break this game because there's no risk if you miss a ranged attack in this game thanks to the lack of ranged attacks.

Thanks for the link Figmental! I love that guy's work. The line work is amazing, and I love the motion his figures have. I always thought it was translated into the models almost perfectly. The Nassier remind me a lot of the old Confrontation models, which is why I picked them up in the first place.

I think the trick is to get chummy with the TO and have sensible proxies for your models, with a back up ready to go in case they decide against it or another player objects.

And yeah, ranged attacks are tricky to balance. They seem super powerful against models with parry that aren't Ashmen. Maybe they'll finish writing the rules for cover someday to help. Maybe something like "When you have cover, replace all Parry results with Block, and you top hit with Block." Consider this a freebie CMoN!
