Commission painting for School

Hi guys was not sure if this should go here or the Trading post forum? But here we go :)

I am working to attend the Tom Savini Effects Program in Pennsylvania this Oct. It is something I have wanted to do for years. It will both finally get me a degree as well as a start in to a career. I am taking commissions now to cover the cost of living out of state for 16 months. I need to raise about $6000 for this. Also if I can not get one of the scholarships offered I will be paying a few more thousand for tuition costs.

So in short thank you for your time and if you have a project in mind please feel free to contact me and discuss it ^_^

good luck. I haven't even made $6000 painting this year!

Armys help that one. I don't like painting the same model over 100 times but it definitely pays more in bulk. I also do allot of sculpting now. Get statue commissions from anime and furry folk from time to time. I have hit the point I can sculpt most things you have a pic for in a 54mm scale of more still working on the smaller gaming size stuff.

That's what I'm going to school for hoping to get into to some thing like toys/prototyping. Or looking at medical prosthetics as a possibility as well. Though if a movie F/X career opportunity does come out of this I won't be that disappointed lol.

ooh i'd love to go to savinni's school but that's a pipe dream for me though if you wan't movie f/x as a career it's possible some people have broken into that side of the industry in highly unusual ways i know some at ADI amalgamated designs inc. (the lovely people behind the creatures of such films as starship troopers and the aliens films) got their jobs from things like just taking a tour round the studios

Yep allot of movies is just meeting the right people at the right time. That's why I'm shooting more at the other things like toys and stuff. The bigest thing I'm looking forward to is the sculpting and learning how to then cast and duplicate. Also the airbrushing class.

indeed unfortunately for me films are the main goal and writing editing and directing are what i lend to the table so i've got a long haul ahead of me to get anywhere though i did dabble with make up and effects my stuff is hardly past b-movie/zombie stuff lol though this reminds me of something i need to post here hopefully that will help towards making a new short film

Unless you are studying full time at the moment, would it be less risky to get yourself a job or part-time work? It would certainly bring the funds in sooner. $6K in 9-10 months should be a doddle I would have thought?? You could always paint less figures but to a higher quality to pull in cash too. I definitely wouldn't rely on painting toy soldiers if my future career depended on it!

Good luck getting it together!

Best Of Success mate!

I wish I could commission some painted mini stuff from ya man. However ~ I prefer to paint my own stuff. You'll be fine. Also, I'm so envious of the school, learning and student lifestyle you've chosen! Wishing ya all the greatest man!

I've recently saw a thread on a different forum about someone who bought 20 euro in models, painted these, put them on ebay and used the money he got to buy more models and repeat the proces...

This might work if you don't have any fixed commissions yet.

I have had DVS do commission work for me. Always a great job! He is doing Rhino's and LRC's now. Next for him is my 256 Bretonnian Cav, 800 armsmen, 800 bowman, 37 Pegasus knights and 5 trebs... but who is counting! LOL :)
