Coming back to painting mini, Deathwing

Hi everyone.
I\'m glad I\'ve found this forum, where a hell lot of help can be found just by reading.

I\'ve quit painting 3 years ago, when my wife gave birth. Now that 3 years have passed, I have more time, and I want to paint again.

My question is focused on Deathwing Terminator.

Frankly, I don\'t like most of the pictures I\'ve saw, I would like to paint them accordingly to the chapter rules, but I failed to see how I could get something less ugly (that\'s my opinion) that the bone color shem saw in the codex.

Anyone experimented something else and could help me?

Welcome back.

Well to be honest they are your minis so paint \'em whatever colour your want.
But if you want to be close to the \"fluff\" why not just prime white and make a very dilute wash of Bleached Bone as a shadow colour and then re-highlight white.

Failing that there are some better colours in the Vallejo Model Colour range which could suite your needs.

I\'ve tried doing them in a cold white as opposed to a bone colour. Didn\'t work out very well, to be honest. White is shockingly difficult to work with.

But with the new Foundation paints or PP\'s Menoth White Highlight, it may be easier. I dunno - haven\'t tried. Yet another thing to try on my bucket list.

hi im working on the same stuff at the minute and have done lots of experiments, the quickest and most effective method is a white basecoat followed by at least three coats of bleached bone, but make it almost like milk let it dry first, then with watered down vermin brown this would be basically vermin brown water work it into the gaps between plates, i have found that painting the additional armour plates around the waist dark angels green it adds a focal point to the crest on the chest which would also be dark green.

post some pics when you decide interested to know what route you might take :)

I highly recommend going the P3 route for painting Deathwing. They have a fabulous selection of off-white, bone and khaki types of colors and they all get very good coverage (even over black).

Personally I don\'t like the Deathwing models that use Snakebite Leather or Vermin Brown as a shade, I much prefer the more muted or greyish tones for that. Just a style preference I suppose, but whichever you prefer :)

Anyway I have a huge pile of assembled Terminators that will hopefully someday get Forgeworld Deathwing shoulder pads, and I was thinking that the best way to paint them might be to base them around P3 colors. Hammerfall Khaki (approximately a Graveyard Earth or Khemri Brown type of color) would make a great starting point, and then mix/blend/hilight up to the Menoth White colors from there. A thinned wash of something like Battlefield Brown into the deep cracks would make excellent extreme shading.

As a final note, I highly recommend doing a Coolmini search for Deathwing, sorted by Rating (Descending). There are some excellent examples to learn from, and many of them have excellent color combinations. Using too much red or green destroys the look of Deathwing in a hurry, and many of these feature silver/grey and it really works.

For accent colors, I really like the super dark reds (P3 Sanguine Base is a good example) and weathered brass for accents on Deathwing. Seems to work a treat. Generally speaking the color combinations from the Menoth group work really well, which shouldn\'t surprise me since I just recommended all the colors from their Privateer Press studio scheme :p

Thanks everyone for your reply.
sadly, I just ordered the citadel paint set, so I'll have a hard time getting P3 paints, especially since I must order everything (I live in Réunion island, far away from all those activities)

I appreciate though all your comment; Indeed, it's my choice, my taste.

I had a shock today, when I saw, in the french WD, pictures from the 2009 golden Demon.
There is a belial mini, the master of the Deathwing, and this is exactly how I like the terminator armor. Hard to describe the color sheme though, i'm no expert. it seems like a very soft mix of white/grey and brown.
I'm very bad at "reading" pictures sadly.
If you want to see what the picture look like (I haven't found it on the net yet), the master painter who did this is Arnaud DURON

Welcome back to the hobby,

Firstly, when i first tackled the Dark Angle force i knew i would have to learn a solid pattern for whites and bone colours, which has helped me alot with morking for the army, when you get to the Termies however, a new scheme is neede.

Believe it or not, basing the model in white is great and all, but after that a few thin coats with dwarf flesh will set up a really nice base to work from. Take it from there with a half and half mix of Bleach Bone to cover the surfces, leaving the dwarf flesh showing in the creases. Work your way up to a high quality Bleach Bone thats is still thinned down with water and a tiny bit of Dwarf Flesh. Finish of with final highlights of bleached bone, and on the most high edges that are extremes hit a bit of thinned down skull white.

Works for me every time and produces a very nice rich looking armour that goes well with the Reds, Greens and Purpules of the army around it.
