Color Scheme Designer Web App

Nice functionality but cyan should face red (as in the R in RGB), yellow should face Blue etc.

Adobe's Kuler is very similar, with I'm guessing a much wider user base.

It bugs me no end that simple oppositions aren't done right in apps like this - you choose a triad and if one of them is a primary then the other two should be too (obviously!) so when this doesn't happen it means all the colour relationships are skewed.

ColorJack is better :glasses-cool:

Oh man. I keep thinking that the art classes I took in junior college are enough to get me through the color theory stuff but it isn't working out.
In all honestly, most wouldn't be :agent:

Colour theory - and 'colour theory' - is taught to many different depths, and levels of accuracy and detail, in various places and unfortunately a great deal of the teaching is weak. Nearly all books for artists that have something on the subject are really poor when it comes to colour theory and application, still promoting the idea of red, yellow and blue primaries for example... which is only about a century out of date!

Can you suggest a book/article/website that is good regarding modern color theory? Note, I'm an engineer not an artist...but there is enough science to color theory that I find it interesting.

Sure, no better place to start than this part of the Handprint site.

Should be plenty technical enough for you. The author's distillation of published work* presents much of the applicable modern understanding of all the related areas - human vision & colour in the abstract, then pigment characteristics & mixing issues (which are often completely unlike theory suggests, one of the main things not addressed in most other writing, including the majority of populist books).

*Many of them are listed in the site's bibliography if you want to read on in more detail.
