Colecting toy soldiers

The Guardian has an article about collecting toy soldiers that is informed, interesting and inoffensive, yet makes no attempt to hide the fact we are all geeks.

Honestly, I\'m not lying! No really, this isn\'t sarcasm! Seriously, it\'s a fine article. OK, don\'t take my word for it, just check it out!!!

See, told you!

I am half way through reading his book at the moment it was bought me as a present by a friend last week and it is actually very good.

The book talks about how he grew up in the sixties with Action man and Airfix kits etc and has a dry Northern sense humour with it and some excellent one liners :D

Can\'t remember if Lono\'s link to the Guardian mentioned the book or not but it is called Achtung Schweinehund! A Boy\'s Own Storey of Imaginary Combat. ISBN for anyone interested is 978-0-316-86136-6.

Bringing back all sorts of memories from my early years having been born around the same time :D

It is an interesting article....

The \'geek\' label though...don\'t you think that comes more from having toy \'orcs and dragons\' as opposed to \'historical armies\'?

It seems to me that a history buff having a Napolieonic Battalion in miniature doesn\'t seem as weird as someone
having an army filled with wizards, elves, fairies, etc.

What do you think...is it just the fact they collect toy soldiers, or does the subject matter have a play in it?

You calling me weird, boy?!? A boob has no right to call anyone weird. ;)

Perhaps \'geek\' is a label that can be applied to anyone who obsesses about brain instead of brawn things.
- an obsessive mountain climber - too brawny
- an obsessive cellist - too brainy (geek)
- an obsessive tennis player - more brawn
- an obsessive ping-pong player - more brain (geek)
- an obsessive external martial artist, like Muay Thai - brawny
- an obsessive internal martial artist, like Baguazhang - brain (geek)
- an obsessive mini painter...

Strange that the article should restrict the word \'hobby\' as much as it does. After all, even house-cleaning could be a hobby.

I paint my thumb.
Even among the inadequate milieu of hobbies, toy soldiers rank very low. Indeed, I often feel it would have been easier if I had chosen a more socially acceptable niche interest such as sado-masochism.

a geek is someone who is into all things geek. for example if i say thx-1189 a \"geek\" would understand this reference. if you have binary tatooed on your arm you are a geek.

if you role-play, paint mini\'s, watch babylon five and not battlestar galactica because the space battles are not done the actual way space battles would be, you are a geek.

but most importantly .... geeks still have lives and do not spend ALL there time on these things.

this title is reserved for the nerd.

a nerd roleplays d&d by himself, learns japanese just to watch anime in its true language, but does not translate with his/her friends around. a nerd lives with his/her parents and has never been married or possibly even kissed someone, other than online. a nerd has two hard drives running at the same time while looking at facebook pages and does mudds at the exact same time.

atleast this is what my friends and i determined defined a geek to a nerd.

:D

Tennis? lol

I think calling someone a \"geek\" or a \"nerd\" says a lot more about the person SAYING it, than the person it\'s directed to.

I\'ve known several royal marines, police, etc who are into modelling or RPGs etc

And conversely, know of several \"nerdy geeks\" who are actually very proficient karate/kung-fu/judo experts.

To summarise - it\'s impossible to entirely accurately \"Label\" anyone - we\'re all different. Even chavs :p

I liked it. I want to buy his book now.

It also made me want to try to fill an entire room up with lead (painted or unpainted), even though it takes me forever to finish one mini.

By the way, real minis are lead. None of this \"safe\" pewter stuff, and certainly no plastic!!
