Cobblestone basing

Hi All,

Just wondering how you guys go about doing a cobblestone base. I was thinking about using some modelling clay and laying a flatten layer over the base, then use either an X-acto knife or straight paper clip to foms the bricks. Any suggestions? :bouncy:

yup...

Self Drying Modelling clay would work well for that, as would any of the epoxy putties (ie green/white stuff).

If you are making the cobblestones rather small, I\'d suggest using a few pieces of brass tubing (or even a plastic straw) that you could bend into an ovalish shape.

Use that as your \"stamper\" rotating it now and again before pressing in into your clay to give some variety. Also using a few of different sizes would help.

I think cobblestones are usually smooth, but you could add a little texture by pressing a small rock onto some.

Good luck!

I have just recently made some cobble stone bases. What I used was the smooth 1 inch square base from reaper. I then filled it with green stuff, flattened it out, I used an old food store card dipped in water to do this, otherwise I found out that the green stuff will stick to the card, I then used a toothpick to press in the stones, making them irregular sized. Keep in mind that you may need to flatten it once again before it dries, so it does not bulge out. I hope this works for you. Have fun and happy sculpting.

Thanks Guys,

I wanted to be sure I was on the right track. I do have a block of self drying modeling clay, but did no think of the straw idea. Also I wasn\'t sure how the \'flash\' of the clay would be handled, but it does make sense to just re-press the clay.

Check out this article...

There are a few more in the articles section of this site that may be of use, but this one semed almost ideal as you could easily adapt the techniques described to suit your purposes.

Cobblestone:

Tools: 1/8” diameter metal tube, needle nose pliers, flat bladed spatula tool (or big ball burnisher), stiff bristle brush

Steps: With the needle nose pliers crimp the circle end of the tube into more of an egg shape (not a uniform ellipse but rather an irregular form with a fatter bottom and more narrow top). Apply a thin layer of putty (I’ll assume that it is a base). Imprint the putty with the egg shape tube end. Keep the imprints close and tight but turn the tool to keep the pattern random. Go all the way to the edge imprinting arcs where the putty ends. With the flat bladed spatula or big burnisher flatten the cobbles to your liking. As you flatten then push the putty of adjacent cobbles toward each other to lessen gaps if necessary. A few irregular shaped cobbles will add to the effect. After the cobbles are almost fully cured 30 minutes or so later (less with a heat lamp), take the stiff bristle brush and texture the firm putty giving the rocks a stippled look.

Keep the tip of your tools lubricated.

I\'ve yet to try it myself, but it seems pretty sound.

Just thought of something. If you crimp both ends of your tube you could have two different cookie cutters:idea:
