Cileon's WIP

Hello!

Like many of you I decided to do a WIP thread. I logged in on this side not so long ago but I've spend a lot of time browsing the forum and the gallery. I'm still amazed with what some people can achieve on such a small scale.
Enough rambling, someting about myself. I started painting when I was around 13 years old, mostly GW actually, didn't know anything else. After 3 years (or 4, doesn't really matter) I lost interest in GW miniatures, because I never played the game, had no interest in it, all about painting them. As I said, I lost interest and the hobby was set aside waiting to be rediscovered. I didn't know anything about other manufacturers or about this amazing community backing this interesting hobby. About 4 months ago something caught my eye and after browsing the web and reading a huge amount of tutorials, painting old mini's and ordering new one's and losing myself in al the different techniques and how-to's, I said f*ck it, I'll post a WIP and see what you guys have to say about my mini's

Currently I have a dark angel veteran squad ( I know, GW again, but space marines, they are a weak spot), Warmachine Skarre queen of the broken coast, Eiryss mage hunter, a croak hunter and some Rackham mini's. And that's what this WIP will be about, the Rackham mini's, first up, crossbowman deserter:

I don't know alot about uploading images here and the picture looks too small, if it looks like crap on the forum, I'll repost the picture but the original size was enormous and I cropped it down to 370 x 480, hope that's ok but I doubt it :p
The cloak is ok I think, his face is hard to do I find, this is my 4th try, he has like some sort of a scar and it turns up to prominently on his face, then the armour is NMM obviously, I'm curious what you guys think, needs alot more shading and highlighting, this is my third try on NMM. I like the color, think that's a good start :p
So there it is, I'll try to update this reguralely.
C & C are welcome

Photo is good. I have been making my WIP photos 500 or 600 pixels wide...scary macro, but it definately points out the flaws that are invisible irl.

I like the contrasts on th green cloak. The armor looks pretty good, but there is a spot on the shoulder guard that needs cleaned.

Nice start mate. I have to agree with Krule about the cloak. I recently read a article about painting scars (Sadly i cant remember where, maybe one of the wise ones on here will be able to help) but the general idea was paint the scar with purple then glaze the skin tone you've used over it to help blend it in. This would lok like a old scar i guess so maybe use a crimson rather than a purple if you wanted the scar to look more recent?

So, quick update, I've been working on the armor again going back and forth from my base colour, I use dark blue grey from VMC if you darken it with black it turns into an ugly grey so maybe I'll try darkening it with a dark blue instead of black :p I've highlighted it upto white and dulled it down again with my basecolour. Redit the highlighting on the cloak, didn't like the green so i used sort of kommando khaki colour from panzer aces, love those paints, but the name isn't on the bottle :p
thanks for the advice secretpaintgeek, definatly going to try that out

yeah, 600 pixels wide is indeed scary macro, going to post some pictures tonight

When I look at it, the cloak seems okay for the moment, the armor on the backside is a real mess, need to change that, think I have to delute my paints more, this may improve the smoothness of the transitions, I don't know, I'll give it a go. But first I'll try to start on the other area's, it'll encourage me I think :p. Many area's are hard to paint and sometimes he's a pain, but I still enjoy painting him very much :p

Metal areas look much smoother now. Inspiring me to give NMM a go myself. Tried once before and disaster would have been a understatement :p
Looking forward to seeing how this guy ends up.

NMM is hard, there is no question about it, but you got to start somewhere :) I already tried it alot on different mini's and the more you do it, the better you will understand how it works, I always highlight it to white and then go back with my base colour to dull it down. going back and forth is the key to NMM I think. And contrast :) but that's not always easy on small area's (like his elbow armour thingy)

Haven't been updating the thread for some time now, but I will always update it, I'm a slow painter and if the mood isn't right, I wont paint.

For my mercenary from Rackham, I just finished painting the leather, not very happy about it. Just finished reading an article on Massive Voodoo about leather, gonna try and put their theory into practise.

I'll update with some pictures soon.

Agree, much smoother. Once you get the upper left arm brace smoothed It will all come together. good work and I sympathize with the slow painting :) Looks like the last warm weekend here before winter, so I will be getting the yard in order instead of painting.

Cheers.

I've not been able to do much lately but I started working on the cloak of Skarre, I really love this model. I tried to work some more on the crossbowman but I've put him aside for some time, been too busy with that guy, need some changing wind :p I recently saw dark vlad on the gallery and there are three who look alike, they set like this 'mood'. This is what I'm aiming at for Skarre, a dark an moody scene. I'm really bumped out how I'm gonna do her base, I already have the broken ship but I want to make her base like she really is standing on a 'broken coast'. I just don't know how I'm gonna represent that. maybe some shells from the beach (I live close to the sea) and add some drift wood, I don't know :p anyway here she is:

I tried to work with orange, red and black in my shades and just white to highlight. her face is also painted but I'll have to restart, doesn't look good, I'm not going for a normal skin colour.
That's it for today, hope I can update a little sooner and hope you like her so far, I know it's not much :)

So what are you all buying for christmas? I think I'll order something from andrea miniatures, or just go for freebooter or hasslefree, I love the simplicity of their mini's and they still look awesome :D
I recently bought 2 davinci sable brushes and I'm not pleased, I have a n° 1 from windsor and newton and that brush is waaaay better than those 2 from davinci, the amount of paint it holds is amazing.
Allright, thanks for reading and/or commenting. I hope you enjoy the small updates.

Wanted to update this thread but had no time, college is using all my time up, exams are coming up so now I have some 'spare' time :p I got some mini's for christmas and ordered some from ebay
Finally picked up Seamus, I just absolutely love this mini and I'm quite pleased with the paint job so far. IRL he actually looks okay, but the pictures reveal lots of mistakes.

This is going to be his base, I want him to stand in a really dark alley, Jack the Ripper atmosphere :) but it's not finished yet :p

View attachment 17920

Then I started Turmiel the Librarian, I really love this model, bought it from ebay, but the robes are killing me, anybody any suggestions on how to do this properly?

View attachment 17921

this are my other projects, got some mini's from Hasslefree, they have really cool miniatures, can't wait to start on them :) then there is a redbox games mini, 28mm this is going to be a challenge, I intend to enter him in the competition that's coming up but I fear I'll have no time, exams are in january and the competition ends in january..

Wolf and Aretmis, huh? I like those sculpts, but you have to be on top of your skintones, that's for sure.

Is wolf the Barbarian dude? What range is he from? Seen the mini a few times around the forums and so on. Might have to pick one up for myself as my skin tones are less than rubbish :p Be good to have something to really get the teeth into and improve.

Well I'm not actually on top of my skin tones, but I paint miniatures that inspire me, most of the time I look at extremely well painted miniatures and try it myself, sometimes I need to stop doing that because I never come close to the desired effect but on the other hand it keeps me going :p

Wolf and artemis are indeed from hasslefree, they'll push my skin tones and maybe I'll improve a little

I'll keep redoing the face on Seamus till it looks somewhat like a tutorial from the brush brothers, everything went well till I had to shade with purple, they make it look so easy.

I also redid the marine's cloak, looks much better (the front still needs work), although my shade colour dried much darker, but like really darker, in a very harsh way, never had this with other colors, quite strange.

and thanks 10ball

Till next time

While I'm not a fan of NMM, I do really like the greens on the Rackham figure you started th thread with.

I'm looking forward to seeing your Hasslefree stuff develop. Kev White is one of my favorite sculptors.
