Choosing a Faction (Warmachine)

Well, originally I bought two Warmachines miniatures because they looked like the biggest, most time-consuming minis my local store had. (I fractured my leg, which sidelined me for the rest of the rugby season, so I ended up with alot of free time).

I bought a Harbinger of Menoth and a Lich Lord Terminus. The Harbinger is about halfway complete, and I haven\'t even assembled Terminus yet...

But, I started actually reading about the game and the history, and I\'m actually starting to get really into it...So, I figure the first thing I should do is pick a faction, and start building an army...

How do those of you who play go about choosing which faction you want to play?

I recently started my warmachine faction. I started a talion charter/highborn covenant. I am a big pirate fan and I found that talion charter and highborn covenant gave me the best choices of the minis I like the most. The charter is all pirates while the covenant has rhulic minis I like which I can field with my pirates, like the horgenhold forge.

So for picking an army I would say look for the minis you like most, that have stats that you like as well, and see which faction, or contract, most of them fall in.

Hi there,

And first of all: sorry about your leg. Hope it heals soon and well.

There\'s a great podcast about all things Warmachine and Hordes, that\'s been running for over three years: Fell Calls, by the podthralls. There are a few episodes about choosing your faction.

http://podthralls.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=129810: episode 66 is partly about choosing a warmachine faction.
http://podthralls.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=326602: on choosing a hordes faction, based on either models, fluff, or rules.

There is more about the warcasters/warlocks, tactics, 500 points for 100 bucks, miniatures, interviews, etc.

Something to listen too while painting maybe.

Good luck!

Thanks!
After listening to the podcast, lots of thinking, and eventually sheer chance, I\'m a proud supporter of the Cryx. Woo!:D

Welcome into the Dragon Father\'s army. ;)

Cryx is a heck of a lot of fun to play, and has so many options. Besides, Terminus is one of the most bad-ass models and characters in the game, and you already got him!

I have been debating this question for days now. You've got the right idea, though. Pick an army whose flavor you like and whose models are the most awesome. That's the most important part, yes?

Yes, it absolutely is. If you don't like the models, why would you spend time assembling and painting them?

Really, though, you don't have to worry as much about "but this faction isn't competitive" with Warmachine/Hordes. Every faction can, and does, win tournaments all across the world all the time. (Sure, you can still build ineffective lists, but that's true no matter what.)

That said, Cryx is best. ;) (Steam-powered zombies, pirate chicks with whips, what's not to love?)

I like good guys so I went with Cygnar, but am actually painting up all the basic starter boxes due for running demos. Choices are something I want to be able to give to the members of our club.Second choice? Cryx

I play the Faction with all the Wolves and half naked ladies :D Circle of Orboros. But then again, that's just my main faction... I also Play Legion, Khador, Cryx, and Minions/ Gators. I like to build lists based on models or fluff I find interesting or even a cool synergistic idea. So remember, you don't have to pick one and only one forever :)

That's ok Anna, because chosing which faction to play in Warmachine/Hordes is ALWAYS a hard choice.

Hell, I've been playing since the beginning, and aside from Mercs, i don't have a "home faction".

I once heard Skorne are the best faction to start on Hordes with. Something about having the ability to do anything well?

How nice of them to throw in the only slightly OP faction in HoMachine.

Seriously funky models though
