Checkerboard

This\'ll probably mark me as a n00b but I did do a search for it and couldn\'t find anything - what\'s with the checkerboard reflections we see sometimes on NMM? I\'m sure Orb told me once before but I can\'t for the life of me remember.

Seen it a few times and liked it. Is it typically on rackman minis. Like your new Avatar. Is it a self portrait?

Here you go... an few examples:

(even used on fur) http://www.rackham-store.com/boutique_us/images_produits/GBCH02.jpg

It looks nice, but I\'m still not sure if I actually like it. It\'s nice freehand and a good visual graphic thingy... but it\'s not really logical to have checkers everywhere on steel and other metal like weapons.

So that\'s what it is, thanks, Cindy.

Thinking about it, how does that relate to metals? If the surfaces are metallic, then it would have to be a checkerboard of different metal alloys. If the checks are to be paint or enamel, then they\'ve got no business being painted as metallic surfaces.

Seems to me like a case of skill being taken too far and misused - doing somethng because it can be done.

If it looks good, who gives a shit? This is fantasy remember?

Bingo you hit the nail on the head.. it looked cool so he did it.. if theres any problems with it, is that a neat origional idea is now copied by too many.

I know one thing, it\'s a right bugger to do.
The process is simple enough, it\'s just getting the paint thin enough to get some form of coverage without making huge ridges when painting and then keeping the squares, square.

So I\'m not the only one who didn\'t know <phew> But is there any idea of what it\'s supposed to represent?

Thanks and not really. It looks a little like I do (in the way that if you draw a face from imagination it tends to look somewhat like yourself, you know?) but any resemblance wasn\'t intentional and it\'s a lot leaner, as befits a professional soldier type.

Well, In Europe, in the days of the city states perception was sometimes important. So armies would get there armor and weapons painted for parade day.
The checker board pattern alongside a solid feild or a painting of an animal was very popular.
However, if the army was actually going off to war the paint was impractical and would wear off.

So, I assume that his sword was \"painted\" in the fantasy world. Then the paint gets worn off from cleaving hobbit holes. Except for the paint in the Lee near the hilt.

So, the checkerboard patterns are \"paint\". The fantasy warriors are meant to have \"painted\" themselves for battle. but then some wears off.

I hope that helps :)

Yes, thank-you, lupine. That definitely helps a lot. Things like this can feel out of context until rationalised. I thought about the paint, but had no reason for \"why?\"

Maybe it\'s just a French thing... :]
LOL ... not quite, look at GW orcs and goblins, they\'ve had checker motifs on them since ages.

Concerning Rackham, in their attempt to come up with detailed paint jobs, they tried to give each army destinct motifs. Some got checkers, others curly lines, ... etc.

:) It\'s not simply painted checks I was curious about, it\'s checkerboard reflections on NMM, I was curious what it was it was supposed to be a reflection of, if anything.
