And I don't mean craft paints used for minis...

Where does everyone buy their mini paints if they don't have access to a lhs?

I'm looking for the cheapest including s&h.

I use Maelstrom Games, but there may be better places if youre in the US. Out here in the boonies in Japan, free intl. shipping is a major bonus.

*edit Nov 8th* Not any more I don't. Very disappointed with maelstrom.

If you're in the UK, Wayland games does GW paints at £1.80 if you go with one of their 6-pot bundles. However I've recently found Wayland to be very slow in turn around so if you want them quickly I'd look elsewhere.

By mini paints do you just want to consider Reaper, Vallejo, Andrea, P3, Cote d'Arms etc? If price is a primary concern you should really consider some of the matt artists' acrylics like the Jo Sonjas which are great paint to begin with but more importantly here they're an order of magnitude cheaper.

Do you have to thin them much to get them the same consistancy as the mini paints? I'm looking for ease of use, and then when my skill has improved, then I can worry more about how much I need to thin something, etc.

Yes, a fair bit but since you have to thin most hobby paints for them to work well anyway it's not that much extra work. If you're looking for ease of use though they're probably not for you on another front since you'd need to do a lot more mixing.

And I will toss in a bone for craft paints. If you buy the Americana paints, as opposed to apple barrel and ceramcoat, the quality is every bit as good as your gw, standard reaper, and p3's

Funny you mention that, same thing happened to me. I guess my bad luck, but they handled it completely professionally, and that is a credit to their organization, and will cause repeat buying experiences...

The Americana craft paints are about the onsitency of he old gw, and not as thin as the Vallejo. If you are layering however, every paint will have to be thinned anyway. Your starting consistency does not matter that much. I use artists paints and he heavy body colors I use come out a little thinner than toothpaste. I thin them down with water. Of course transparency is as much a product of pigment as consistency-as anyone who has worked with yellows knows.

I've kept an eye out locally for Jo Sonja for over a decade and we just don't seem to have it here, apart from sighting the occasional multi-pack. Do you know of a US or UK online retailer who ships internationally? Quite keen to have a play.

That sucks given the parent company is just next door!

Haven't done any comparison pricing in a while but Dick Blick may be the place to get them if ordering from the US, although I'd imagine they'd be cheaper from Oz. Once it's back up, the suppliers' page on the Chroma website is here.
