Chainmail?

Hey everyone,

Well I have been practicing on a few plastic Orcs, ended up throwing them out after though... They turned out to be guinea pigs for my paint diluting and highlighting practice. Really enjoying myself now :) I have a quick and probably very noob question but here goes:

I have bought an old 1984 GW Dwaf Hero from eBay, really like the sculpt. Required a lot of preparing but its ready to go now.
Could you guys advise me on how you paint chainmail? I would like to achieve full highlights if possible.
Also the Dwarf is smoking a pipe, any tips on painting the inside of the pipe bowl, so it looks like glowing embers? Its a very tiny area, but I was thinking red, stippling up to yellow? But I have no idea really.

Cheers in advance

For chainmail, I use a very primitive method;
- Base black
- Overbrush (a wettish sort of drybrush) with boltgun metal
- overbrush with chainmail
- drybrush with mithril silver
- drybrush with metallic medium, if you can find some, otherwise a very light drybrush with white

It\'s a heavily textured area, and other than painting each link, I can think of no other way.

For the pipe bowl, remember that the hottest part of a fire is the lightest. So, perhaps put down orange first, then red, then perhaps a few spots of dark brown to indicate cooler ashes. Whether you\'ve got the space to do that though...

Paint it black.
Drybrush with medium grey.
Drybrush very lightly with pure white.
Put a THIN wash of blue over the whole thing.

Metalic medium is something you can mix with any paint to turn it metalic. If used by itself it will highlight the lightest silver such as GW\'s mithril.

I think what looks best on chainmail is, painstaking as it may sound, to paint each link individually. This is of course only realistic if the size of the links is reasonably large. Also, it works best with NMM. I did it like this on my \"Maiden of Sigmar\", but it is best demonstrated on Cheeba\'s Warrior Priest.
