cartoon paint style

Oke here is a couple of questions really:
1. when i paint steel in NMM style it looks like \"cartoon\" style nmm what can i do to improve it to a more realistic nmm?
2. When painting with especially the white (and sometimes fortress grey) when diluded they don\'t \"melt\" totally but come more into pieces (wanted to post pic but internet sux today).
3. what defiance cartoon style painting from realistic painting ( I am used to dilute my paint very strongly to create smooth blends do i need to ad harder highlights?).

uruk.

1. Too clean grey\'s? Try to add some browns/purples/blues for greys and check inspiration from real items.

2. Light colors are pigment heavy and can come out chalky, here is some good pointers how to avoid that: http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/2008/02/08/12470

3. Usually cartoon style means more saturated colors and realistic more less saturated colors. :)

If you want more realistic look i recommend Vallejo Model Color paints, they dry dead flat (matt) and are less saturated and more earthy colors.

i would say cartoony stuff has brighter colours and more contrast.

nmm is a cartoony type of painting and it\'s hard to get a very realistic look (i know i have never succeded!). try dulling some of the contrast and having some \'hot spots\', very bright but small highlights. bear in mind that not all nmm has to be perfectly blended as some metal will have sharp transitions of light to dark

practice is the key, practice and observation of real metals

as for the grey/white thing, i have had the same trouble lately. not sure why so i will be interested as to ideas people may have
