Captain927's Painting Log

Hi All,

im back with a new W.I.P. thread as the last one started to get a bit disjointed. I'll try to keep this one a bit more organized and a bit more up to date. I haven't been completely absent from the hobby as I've been spending more time working on projects for my side company, Mollie's Miniatures. (Shameless plug, visit us on Facebook).

To start this W.I.P. off for a second time, I decided to revisit a bust I've tried (and failed) to paint twice before. Here's hoping third time is a charm.

It is "I will fear no evil" by Polaris Minor, sculpted by Oleksandr Bilibov.

Still lots to do with it. Not so concerned with blends at this point as I'll deal with them a bit later on. It is also my first time trying out a different style of flesh. I'm using the Malefic Flesh Paint Set by Vallejo. Pictures show the progression from the shadows up.

Thanks

Spiteclaw's Swarm

While I'm waiting to get fully set up with my airbrush, I decided to put the bust on hold and I'm now moving along with the Skaven troops from Shadespire. These are my first Warhammer pieces since the mid 90's.

Here's where i am at so far.

Looks like really good starts on both projects. I like the eyes on the bust as they create great atmosphere. Just remember, 'more contrast!'. :)

Thanks frzn.

I'll admit, I have tidied the lines a bit on the bust. The problem with using Sergios technique on the bust is that the face is fairly "full" and there aren't a lot of obvious depressions for contrast. I've brought out what I can in the cheeks (not yet shown), but we'll see how it develops.

The Shadespire figs I'm trying not to spend a huge amount of time on. They will be for gaming, so I can't get bogged down in the details.

Its good to see you back at it Captain and both of these projects look really promising. I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with them :)

Spiteclaws Swarm

Thanks Kuribo

I managed to knock off another rat's flesh and fur. Still have a bit of touch ups and details to add, but otherwise I'm satisfied with it.

Im leaving all of the armour and weapons until last as I'm unsure whether I will try NMM or TMM.

Comments welcome and appreciated.

Aymer de Valence

Well I ended up doing what I had hope I wouldn't. I'm on to another project.

Inspired by Bailey's crusader, I thought I'd work on a Knight of my own. This is an old 54mm New Hope Design based on a picture in one of the Oprey books. It is Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembrooke.

Just started throwing paint on it for now. I'll use TMM for the chainmail and weapons. He's got some fancy threads so I'll really be pushing my skills here.

Cheers

Next up is the face. Not my strongest skill and it's my second kick at the can with it. Luckily it's a small area but it's still missing something to tie it all together. Comments and criticism welcome.

Cheers

The face looks pretty solid Cap. Maybe glazing some reds onto the cheeks and a bit of blue where he might have some stubble? I don't know, looks very good to me.

I think Fox's advice is spot on. Some really light glazing will take that skin to the next level. This guy is shaping up really nicely and I look forward to seeing your progress on him!

Thanks Fox and Kuribo.

Ive taken your advice and added more red into the cheeks. I had done it before, but you both confirmed it got lost in the blending. It'll give the stripes a try next as I'll shade both the blue and white stripes together. As much as I'd love to free hand the stripes, I'm going to mask and airbrush them. I'll post pictures when the stripes are on.

Infinity

I've been trying to stay active and began some side work on some gaming figures for infinity. Lots of fun, but lots of tartan. Hoping to get a decent force together for a current online campaign.
