Hi everybody; not only am I new to the site & the forum but to model painting too. I posted my first dude up here and went searching around for a \"model painting forum\" for some tips (without much luck); and what do ya know, CMON already has one! :p How convenient.

So anyways, here\'s my dude: http://www.coolminiornot.com/80181
(I knew better than to leave the mold lines on there, I was just eager to start painting) I\'m really looking for input on the paint and the bases; I\'ve got no clue on how/when to make a base.

Thanks all!

Wow, great first mini! Bases are simple to do. You can start by painting them green, then applying pva glue and then flock. You can also try sand, which is then painted - check my minis, I base them with sand.

Welcome to CMON and to the forums.

Good work - first post? not bad at all. couple of tips:
Spread your values further (darker darks, brighter highlights). We\'ve all done it. Think stage makeup. You have to exagerate a bit to make it look right both due to size and light washout.

Then, read the articles on basing. That is an easy full point to have a decent bit of base work.

I look forward to seeing what else you post. Keep up the good work.

Welcome to the forume :flip:
Great job considering it\'s your first mini, I wouldn\'t even dare to post my first mini (you\'d probably just see a blob of paint :p). The green looks like it could use some darker shading. The metaliics look really nice, And the rust is amazing for a forst try (I\'m still trying to get my rust to look good :p).
Base are pretty simple to do just think of were he would be standing in nature and then try using everything arounf you to do it. For simple base just use flock, then you can try adding some small rock. For more complex base try using cork +sand, or sculpt some things in green stuff or polyester ( flag stones, staires, watever your imagination is the limit). Hope to see some more of your work, it\'s always nice to see somone start out and improve.

lol, see the thing about the spear is: it looks a lot better in the picture than it does in person:rolleyes: if you were to see it, you\'d probably be less impressed by the attempt. ... but sssssshhh, nobody has to know that part :p

So basic newb questoin: in what stage of the process do you start building the base? Do you start to glue sand down right away, once the model is already finished, somewheres in the middle... I\'m sure it all depends on what I\'m comfortable with, but seeing as I don\'t *know* what i\'m comfortable with; what do y\'all usually do?

about the bases...

I like to do mine last,It\'s easier to reach the trickier bits underneath the figure then;) but I\'m sure everyone will have their own take on this! Some people like to play with or sculpt bits on their bases as they\'re working on the figure painting,it gives you a break from painting when you need it....beleive me you will!lol

You will always have something to learn - I\'ve been at this lark for 30 odd (possible very odd) years and have only just discovered and started using a pin vice to hold the mini while painting.
This means I now do the base as a separate model and then glue (and pin) the mini to it after painting.

Have a look at the tutorials on this site for both basing and painting techniques - they are brilliant!

hi Melsuzat, welcome to the forums. I think posting a mini is the best way to say hi here, and that is particularly brave when it\'s you\'re first ever.

But you\'ve done great work here and you show a lot of promise, and my best piece of advice for you is to just do A LOT more. I think when starting out, all the technique in the world won\'t help yet because your muscle in your hand and arm aren\'t acustomed to the motions of painting in this medium. Likewise your vision takes a while to get comfortable. The best cure is just do more!

Keep reading, keep looking at minis here, keep listening to feedback from people here, as there is an increadible wealth of knowledge behind this group (despite the outward appearance :D), but like I said, just keep doing it!

I would bet that if you look at some of our most improved painters over the last year they would also be some of the most prolific as well.

@ provoke...
Aaah, the cheaters way out :p or is it the \"finacially comfortable\" folks\' way out... my funds are quite lacking right now as well, so me thinks i\'ll have to go the creative route. But hopefully someday I can get a few of those, they look great.

Indeed, welcome to this crazy little section of teh intarwebnet. ;)

You\'re on a really good starting ground for your painting. I gave this sucker a 6, and that\'s where I honestly believe he is (note that I\'m a bit more reserved in my votes than some), regardless of being a first model. I think with some practice, you should easily be reaching into the 7.5s.

As others have mentioned, get rid of the mold lines. ;)

The main areas I\'d suggest are more contrast (deeper shadows and lighter highlights), and blacklining.

Your brush control seems pretty good, and I\'m sure it will get better as you work on more models (that\'s really the only way to work on brush/paint control, anyways).

You should make sure to leave this dude on here, so that in six months you can paint another version of the same model, and have \"before and after\" pix. :)
