Calling for expert aid! How would I go about...?

... making a foggy base?

I\'ve never seen this attempted, or if I have it\'s a poor attempt with some cotton...

How would you achive the effect of something like fog? Is it even possible?

This __ link __ is the image I\'m using for inspiration.

Any thoughts, ideas, theories, because I need it all! :)

Sorry for DP

Tony and I got talking, and he is gonna atempt to use clear resin to do this.. Gonna add cotton wool to the clear resin in layers, to give the feel of the fog.

This might work :D or... maybe not :D But it\'s worth a shot ;) Great idea Tony!

I think you should try to give the effect of fog in the way you paint the mini, rather than something outside the mini. For example giving everything a greenish tinge and bringing up the highlights all the way to pure white on surfaces to make them look wet and shiny. And making the bottom of the cloaks and boots look slick with water/mud might help (if you want them muddy then you should go in to the brown colour range, if you just want them wet then you should just make the colour darker and maybe a bit cooler). If you go with a cobblestone base you could proably accentuate the effect by giving the cobbles a greenish tinge too, and maybe putting sculpt water over the base, specially in cracks, to make them look wetter. Just my thoughts, I\'ve never attempted it though.

too much cotton in it, and it is the result... it looks like dry Ice (the one used to make the smoke)

You know - if you wanted to be a flash git (No - I don\'t mean ork freebooterz)

You could always indent your base and actually use that stuff the model railway geezers use to make fake smoke! :p

But for Static, permanent smoke effect...??

Hmm - would take some thinking...
How about some very thin crepe paper that you can see through...?

No - that sounds awful...

Argh! Please be sure to post some more pics of the cotton/resin idea though - that sounds intriguing - even if it doesn\'t work for fog it might be useful for something else...

If you try he cotton idea rather than building up as a block set it in wisp shapes..by drying over cotton bobbins coated in vaseline for curves. You could also use several other types of material..
1 is filter wool.. available at aquarium shops .. It is a more plasticy artificial substance than cotton so not as absorbent giving you a little more control..
2. very fine grade steel wool. This stuff can be teased out and could make very nice fog wisps..sprayed white and grey and carefully teased out wold give a nice semi transparent fog effect..
3 Vallejo clear water effect.. One of these is a fantastic clear type resin that can be shaped and tinted to make Waterfalls etc.. It is fairly rigid when set and again could be dried in shapes usin curved surfaces coated in vaseline.. Then wash it with tamiya smoke or other colours..
It won\'t be easy but would look cool..I am going to have a play around see if I can get some kind of mist effect on my mousillon questing knights....

I\'m not entirely sure but I think the effect would work best exaggerated so the very base of the model is clear but the mist sits as a sort of layer around shin / knee height...

Great idea\'s Demon :)

Depending on the thickness of the fog, you would need to take that into account, because you could make the fog just cover the base in like a 2mm layer, or you could have it cover all the way to the shin, so the base was basicaly fog, and nothing else, maybe some grass sticking up over the fog..

I\'ll need to experiment alot with this, because if this could be done to a point where it actually looks like fog, it could be a breaktru :D

This could be a crazy idea but I had seen some stuff on a science show called \'aerogell\', refered to by the creators as frozen smoke. It\'s a substance that is more the air inbetween the substance itself than actual material it\'s made of. It\'s a micro matrix that really does look like smoke, only it\'s a cube of smoke.

The problem with Aerogel is you can\'t really scuplt it, it would just shatter or break. You would probably need to have it molded exactly how you would want it. Unless you have a set of diamond cutting jewelers tools.

Also most of it, at least the silicon based stuff is ruined when in contact with liquid. You would have to be awefully careful with your paints.
It\'s a cool concept though.

Now if that was possible to use it would be perfect... But as Gilvan said it would be extremely difficult... :(

That stuff is wicked cool. I had a chance to play with the stuff at JPL\'s annual open house.

It is very brittle but I think you can carve it out if you are careful. The only thing that would be inhibiting is the price. That stuff is expensive.

I bit ironic that something that is 99.8% air cost so much.

Im thinking something like this may be possible a bit cheaper with he vallejo stuff I mentioned earlier.. Just ordered some froth tint to try it out..Damn Seraphim you\'ve got me thinking now..good luck...

hehe :D Good ;) I think this is something that could be really cool if perfected, but just how to do it is the hard part.

It\'s good I\'ve made some people think about this ;)

Use tinted white glue. You will have to build up the base with say clear plastic wrap but it could work. (It works as well as water effect anyway)

I think, if you were gonna try the clear resin/water effects method, that any colour you decide to use to tint it with, shouldn\'t be thoroughly mixed in...

That is to say - to keep it like the 0.1 second power weapon tutorial in the articles section...

And maybe do it in several layers, so that you could build up the opacity/tranparency as the fog thickened/thinned...

This thread should be flagged - it seems a lot of people are interested... Me for one!
