Boy Scouts in the Grand Canyon

Cake or Death?
11 years in the Boy Scouts does something to your head. You train and practice so much for disaster that when you finally encounter it, you process it as an adventure rather than a trauma.

So I was reading the news of some scouts stranded in the Grand Canyon (story here), and was not at all surprised by the following paragraph:

\"Muench said the boys did not appear to be traumatized by their ordeal. Colin even called his mother to describe the helicopter lift as \"so cool.\"\"

I have many fond memories of Scouting. Never went beyond Boy Scouts but it was a real good time.

A friend of mine actually made Eagle Scout.............Now that is a feat!!

Replace \'fearless\' with \'clueless\' and it still holds true!

Scouts are a good deal, but I fear they just aren\'t the same as years ago.

For instance, my Nephew (2nd grader) got told by a older scout (5th grader) that he was NOT ALLOWED to whittle because he didn\'t have the proper badge for it.

Actually, that sounds right; Cub Scouts need to earn their Whittlin\' Chit before they are allowed to carry or use a pocket knife. It\'s a safety measure to ensure that all scouts with knives have received formal safety training. You go through the same process when you graduate to Boy Scouts, when you have to earn your Totin\' Chit.

I get that. And I do understand, but it does seem to squash that \'independent\' spirit that at one time was so important within the organization.

Good point. I hadn\'t thought of it that way.

But you\'d never be able to tie the knot that gets you saved by that helicopter if you\'ve already cut your fingers off by using a knife you weren\'t supposed to.

Now, listen!! I whittled from a young age and I disprove of your comments!

I would flip you the bird, but sadly, I\'ve had both my middle fingers removed due to some unfortunate pocket knife usage!

First: How is he supposed to get his whittlin\' badge if he can\'t practice!???

Second: You got those INJURIES because you were playing \'pocket pool\' with a knife in your pocket, and you know it!lol

I dunno, if I got stranded in the grand canyon i\'d think it was pretty cool for a while.
I\'d prolly bum around for a couple of hours before I got bored then solomly declare \"Well...this sucks...\"
I\'d only start panicing when I actually realised there wasn\'t a bar for miles. Now THAT, my friends, is what you call a disaster.

Incidentally, I got booted out the scouts for kicking the detritus out of the scoutmasters boy lol He was a right little bastard he was.

Thank the Litagtion Mentality now prevelent in the world.
Scouts and Scout Leaders are now so hampered in what they can do due to so many Anti-Litigation processes.
