Blood for the blood god, skulls for me!

So... I have been lurking around here for a looooooong time now. During this time I've been doing a bit o' this and that in modelling.
So far only GW though and not at all that much. During the last 6 months I've managed to assemble (and to some minor degree convert) a couple of lousy catachan guys. Though, the last months saw a rise in activites and since december I've put together a unit of the "new" and beautiful Chaos Knights, converted and painted a Chaos Hero, and done most of the conversions for a DP.

This is my second DP-conversion that is based on the same model. And the model being utterly and completely fugly is the reason for the conversions. It is, of course, the "Fuck, I really need to take a crap right here and now"-metal DP that GW released for 40k some years back.

The first thing I had in mind was to get rid of the pose, so I cut of and repositioned his left leg. Thereafter I went out to create a dynamic pose and lengthen the torso. I also repositioned his right arm in order to get the new pose. After this I've added the fur cloaks to get some added sense of movement and gave some scuplting a go in order to get some details on him. I also added horns. Moar Hoaarns!

And, since :pwp: , here you are!! (bear with me now, the pics are crappy but are mostly here to get a sense of the bigger picture and scale)

There! C&C is welcome!
Better pics hopefully coming this weekend :)

I approve of this conversion...
Still there is something thats bugs me about the pose, (how can I say this?) He feels "unstable"(!?).... I don't know if its that the feet is pointing to much "in" (like a manga heroine) or that his left elbow is to far up...
I think some minor repositioning would do wonders.
Maybe widening the pelvis to compensate the growth spurt his gotten

Spanks!

As far as converting goes I probably wont do much more than clean him up a bit (mainly the back of his left leg and fill some gaps), give him the exhaust-skull-thingies and finish the spine.
The pose i made to look like he's lunging forward to get to his target and slay pretty much everything that happens to stand in his way. I basically think of it as if he's just about to leap of the stump and land on top of some poor guys face.
There are, undoubtedly, thing about I would like to change. His right arm being one thing.
The pose and feet are things I haven't honestly thought about, but I will look into it. Later this week though, an exam tomorrow and a bit of other studielike stuffs to do that I, unfortunately, have to prioritise. :(

What do you by widening the pelvis, though?

Edit: Does anyone now how the new Grave Guards are in size ratio to the Marauders?

It feels like you forgot a word.... and I'm guessing "Mean"...

I mean that he do not have "ass" to go with his body... It will make him look more power full and it will complement the upper body

I did not. It escaped. I'm quite sure it was there earlier.

Ah, okey. Now I'm following ya. Hmms... I might have and idea for that I think. Bulking out shouldn't be too hard. Just need to cut up some plasticard or something and GS a bit I think...

Basic work done. Now I need to just clean it up a bit with GS and that should be it (hopefully) for this part. Now that I've looked a bit closer at that part of him I realise I would like to widen his hips a bit too, but the sculpt makes that too much work for me to be willing to dit :/
Well, hopefully there'll be pics this week. Pics taken with a better camera.

Ok, so I've finished most of the ass-bulking and have started filling gaps and doing minor touch-ups. I've also made his spine turn into some thing that could, if you squint and twist your head to right and shake it hard, be called a tail as well as hiding some of the ugliest cables on the massive left arm.
Now I basically just need to finish of the rear of his left leg, add the pelts again, fill up remaining gaps and add the exhaust-thingies.
I wont go with wings even though the rules say he's a flyer. I imagine him either taking giant leaps into the enemy or "teleporting" through chaos dimensions in true Nightcrawler-style.

Anywys, pics!

Different views on his arse

Arse and tail-looking-thingie.

His shoulderpads. Moarn hoarns!

And lastly his left arm.

Now, I'm off on greater adventures! Up, up and away-web! *swooshes away*

Spank you, dear sir!

Right now I'm pondering the colors for him. As I like the straight forward, no bullshit-attitude of Khorne that's how he's gonna be. So I'm thinking of going with a "blood and brass"-scheme for him with a bit of black in there too. Though I can't decide wether I want the armor or the skin to be red or what colors I want for the trim. Damn these decisions!

Will add some pictures of the rest of my small force later on today I think.

And I'm still wondering if anyone knows if the Grave Guard legs are mathcing in size to the marauders bodies?

I have a thread! Upload ALL the pictures!

So, as promised, here are some pics of the rest of my force. Ergo 5 Knights and a Hero.
The fluff says that the Chaos Knights each are unique, or at least bear unique shields. I like this though and therefore made sure that no two will be painted or modelled the same way. So I've made a few headswaps and I also edited a lot of the original heads as the skulls on most of them just looked ridicoulus. The heads I switched to are from Maxminis skulltribe helmets. I've also made sure each horse is painted differently.

As I've looked through the pictues I've noticed a lot of things that need touching up and I will go back to that at a later point.

Chaos Knights

Group photo

I'm probably the most pleased with the skullhead on the Champions horse, the red chaos star on the metal horses head and the horns of heads of the knights themselves.
It's just aspiring to be TT, no more. Still, as I said, it needs touch ups.

Hero/champion
Converted with an older Slaanesh champion I had lying around. The head is a Chaos Knight head with horns and ridiculous skull removed and the plume from the Slaanesh hero on steed added using GS. The axe is made using the hand and haft from a chaos lance, the axe from a chaos knight and a lot of filing and fitting. The skulls in his left hand come from the DE chariot with the shield hand for the champion from the Chaos Warriors box. The horns on the shoulder are the ones previously removed from his head. Sculpting-wise I'm happy with him. Painting-wise I'm not. Though I didn't really like painting the body and therefore got sloppy with it. At least I'm kinda happy with the axe. It's my first try with such an effect. Aimed for a sort of hot, inner fire, kinda look. The last picture is best in representing the colors.

I really need to switch my hand out for a steady one and go get myself some new brushes...

Damnit! One has to go back almost to page 3 to find his own thread now a days!

Well, I basecoated and started laying out foundations for the colors. I decided on a blue/grey color for the skin, a darker red (which will be brought up) for the armor and a dark bronze for the trims. Will probably make the horns/bones/spine et.c. brighter to have something light in there.

Anyways, this is how he's looking now

*mumble mumble* Page 4... *grumble*

Oh, Haaai!

The big meanie is pretty much done now. Just some minor touch ups and finishing of a few horns, but save for that I'm judging him done!
So... Pics!

I washed the skin with a wash of Regal Blue. The armor is a base of red gore/scorched brown in about a 1:1 mix and then a lot of thin washes with pure red Gore, The trims are scorched brown/Dwarf Bronze in about a 1:1 mix there too.

C&C is welcome and appreciated!

Still looking for some C&C here...

Anyways, I've gone and bought me a WoC Battalion, a pack och marauder horsemen and one pack of grave guard. Oh! A Khorne Exalted Champion as well. The finecast scares me... :p
As of today most of the things are assembled. This includes:
5 Marauder horsemen /w handweapons and shields.
5 Chaos Knight /w Lances
10 Marauders /w Great Weapons
10 Chaos Warhounds
12 Chaos Warriors /w Shields and Hand Weapon

The only thing remaining is 10 marauders to be equipped with Handweapons and shields. The reason these have been saved for last is that I enjoy converting them.
They are being made using the lower bodies from the Grave Guard and the upper bodies from the Marauders. I have also bought a set of maxmini shields mostly for fun.

Pics will be coming!

I reckon your daemon prince is a fine conversion. Good dynamic pose and he looks right narked off. Job is most defintely a good un. With regards to the paint job, I think its not as good as the conversion. Not saying the paint is terrible, just that the conversion is at a higher level. To bring your painting up a bit, try for not using black to delineate areas, and use colours to shade (I mean, dont just add black to shade. You can do stuff like add a bit of dark blue to shade red, or add some dark brown. Both work, but create a different feel.) Also, the flash photos wash out the colour something awful, so its kinda hard to comment on colour, really. Try putting your camera (or phone, as the case may be) on a pile of books to steady it and then turning off the flash. Also stick a piece of paper (white or a printed background) behind the mini. It'll make a huge difference. Anyway, keep up the good work :)

*edit* oh, and dont be disheartened by a lack of comments. It happens, sometimes :) Keep posting, and folk will wander by eventually. :)

Thanks a bunch :)
Will have to pull the regular excuse here I think *Hr-hrrm!* "Well, the pics doesn't really do it justice.." ;)
But it is true, I find the painting way less fun than the sculpting and that tends to show a bit... :p

I actually have not shaded anything but the skin after the painting, and that was shaded with regal blue, the same color used for the skin during the painting.
Been thinking of shades for the armor too though. Maybe blue shades to tie it together a bit more.

Books you say? Why did I not think of something like that? Will do for next photo session! :)

Thanks a bunch!

So, just to show of a bit of where I am at the moment. Things have been quite slow due to exams and other school-related shenanigans.
Anyways, here's the champions for the different units I have queued for priming and painting now.

First off; Marauder Champion /w Great weapon

Head is from the Skull Tribe pack from maxini (I think) and weapon is the banner top from the Chaos Warriors.

Second; The Chaos Knight Champion /w Chaos Lance

Head is from the Chaos Warrios box, Shield is custom.

Third; Chaos Warrior Champion /w Hand weapon and shield

Head and shield from the Chaos Knights box.

And last, but not least (or... actually, he IS the smallest to); the Champion and currently only finished model for my Marauders /w Hand weapon and shield.

The idea here was Templars of Khorne, and as such I wanted skirt-thingies form them. I've used the Grave Guard legs for that. The head and axe are from the Marauder Horsemen and the shield is, once again, Maxmini. This time Lotus Tribe shields.

Well, of to a new day!

So...I'm once more without a camera.

I finished painting the first of the puppies yesterday and I'm currently painting the templar-guy. So far I've been keeping a standard with which I'm quite happy and feeling I'm actually pushing myself a bit and making progress with my painting.
Pics when I once again get a hold of a camera!

Thanks!
That chap is currently undergoing painting. Got the skin done and I'm now working on the reds, browns and metals. Noticed I need a few new colors though, so of to the shop for me. Birthday gifts - Hooray!
