Blood Angels and Knights of Blood Project

Hi Everyone,

This is my first first project post at CMON. I've been a lurker on the site for years, and finally am taking the plunge and putting a little bit of my stuff out there!

For a little background on myself, I've been a 40k player since I was 12, or, more accurately I was WHEN I was twelve, and started painting again this year at the age of 30. My how the world of minis has changed!

Anyways, I've been a lifelong Blood Angel devotee, and so I've been building up my painting skills on my favorite chapter. Here are some pics of my most 'worked-up' marines to date.

You'll notice on one of them I am trying out some battle damage. I don't hate the result, but I'm also not completely happy with it, so any suggestions on how to do successful battle damage on RED armor, please share.

I am also working on a large contingent of Knights of Blood, and I'll post those shortly. I'm planning on using them in my Blood Angels force as a Death Company "counts as".

Anyways, thanks for checking out my work, and I'd love to get some feedback!

Knights of Blood

Here are some of the Knights of Blood I've been working on. I really liked the background for the chapter, but I felt that the regular Mk VII armor helmets just didn't work for them, so I've been trying to use some alternatives. The death company box has some great options, and I also figured the grey knight helmets would be sweet.

Thanks! I'm interested in trying to give them a more gritty realistic look; one of the Blood Angels up top has some battle damage which I was just trying out. I took a pointy razor and drilled tiny holes in him, and then just painted around the holes with a 50/50 mix of black and boltgun metal. It looks ok, but there's something off about it that I can't place. Battle damage on Red armor seems difficult.

Also here is another Knight of Blood WIP. It seemed a little weird painting a shield emblem on a shield, but I liked adding black into the mix, and a red blood drop on black armor seemed weird.

I'm considering maybe just a black shield with a white blood drop?

Thoughts? Also, crossed swords: do them with metals/greys, or just forget them on the shield?

I would suggest using the sponge technique. Either charadon granite or a dark metal color. Then "underligth" with a light colour, either n orange or a flesh color, the large chips. Should give a 3d effect?

All these lovely painted marines makes me wanna paint some. But i promised myself no more marine armies untill 6th ed 40k next year, or some more reliable rumors hits the interweb

I'm liking the knights of blood a lot. I very much approve of your use of GK parts to make non GK minis. It's a good look. I may even be tempted to pick up some GKs myself and make (bwahahahah!) chaos marines out of em :D

I think the Grey Knight heads are really excellent and versatile. I REALLY didn't like how the KoB paint scheme looked in the Blood Angels Codex; it just didn't fit with the name or the fluff for the chapter, in my opinion, but I was intrigued by their renegade status, so I set out to figure out what they would actually probably look like.

I think they GK helmets would actually work pretty well on some chaos marines, actually (if you can get past the extreme heresy). You should go for it and let me see the results!

I may well do just that :) Thanks for the comment on the razorwing, btw. It's all down to the airbrush, rather than me, I assure you. :)

Working on finishing a few more brothers! For the most recent KoB, I decided that the shield-within-a-shield placed just below the shoulder pad shield emblem was too redundant, so I've settled on just having a nice red blood drop in the middle of a black shield.

I've been putting a lot of effort into giving some depth to the BA sergeant's face, however I don't know how much that comes off in this photo (it's dark out).

I'm really happy with how the plasma gun marine is coming. The armor came off smooth, the highlights didn't give me any problems, and the lighting in the gun came out alright.

I'm exciting to finish these and post them, probably tomorrow!

Basing Ideas

I've been thinking today about basing. I'm basically happy with the bases for these guys; I know that sand and rocks isn't the most exciting base, but I like how it looks against the red models, and I'm also trying to relate to the Blood Angels fluff of being from an irradiated desert planet.

HOWEVER: Just because it's desert themed, there could still be some cool stuff to be done. I'm considering getting some skulls and other accoutrements that you might find in the detritus of a desert planet. Any ideas or links for inspiration are appreciated!

Finished another of the Knights of Blood

Finished another of the Knights of Blood! I really liked working on this one; without the gun he almost looks like a straight-up knight.

*sniff*sniff* I thought I smelled Blood Angels! Welcome back on the wagon mate! I picked up the brush again as well a few years ago after a very long hiatus. You've got a good vibrant scheme going on there, they look very eye catching and bright. I like 'm, even though I do prefer a darker, dirtier version myself.

Thanks Meph! Yeah, I've been admiring your blood angels projects for a while now. I like my marines gritty, but I haven't figured out exactly how to do battle damage in a way that I am happy to distribute across all my guys. I will say though that my marines actually are a bit darker than they appear in the photos. Not a lot, but they definitely have a 'darker' look to them than seems to come across in the photos.

Here are a few more Knights of Blood that I've put together.

Here's an updated version of the Blood Angels sergeant. I've been working really hard on his face; trying to give him a bit of depth, and also trying to get the eyes to look less 'simple' than I have traditionally done. Also worked really hard on the highlighting of the powerfist, although I'm not sure how well that comes off in the photo.

This guy's almost done. Just some more work on the iron halo gem, some gold highlighting on the chest, some work on the gun, maybe a last round of blazing orange highlights. I've been going over my orange highlights with Baal red wash to soften the lines, but sometimes it softens them a little too much, I think.
