Blending??

Hi everyone. I am new to the site and to the process of \'blending\'. I have read the GW publication about blending but it doesn\'t seem to make much sence to me! I have also read an article or two on here regarding blending and they say to put 2 colors on that are wet and merge them together.

I want to blend GW Red Gore in to a darker colour for a Khorne army scheme and any comments or suggestions on how to do this would be really great. Thanks

\"Blending\" as you\'re referring to is the act of wet-blending. Some folks use the term synonymously with other techniques such as layering/feathering. Both accomplish the same thing with a little different approach.

If you\'re using acrylics, I would suggest using a layering approach (wet paint over dry paint) before I would recommend wet-blending.

Wet-blending is a great technique, but it\'s really not for the faint of heart, as it brings several other concerns with paint-handling----not the least of which is paint open-time. That is to say, acrylics dry very fast relative to other types of paint.

Regardless, there are several articles, including some here on CMON, around the art of mini-painting. The Vallejo website offers a pretty good article on layering/feathering as well.

To trigger you on your research path----

For your reds, I would follow a base red with a series of \"directed\" washes (a black/red mix or a brown/red mix), followed by a reinforcement of the base color, followed by layered highlights, followed by a glaze of thin red ink to reinforce the reds.

I hope that helps..and good luck,
Kev

P.S. Welcome to CMON!

Hi Kev,

First off thankyou for your kind welcome to the site, I am finding it very informative.

Secondly, WOW!! I have just checked out some of your painting work. Absolutely brilliant. Amazing quality! I aspire to such standards. Not only your painting but also your color choices and photoraphy/photo shop skills! All of the highest order in my opinion.

Futher questions, in relation to the type of paints, you mention vallejo paints, are these better than GW ones?

I will check out their website for the tutorial on blending as suggested. Also, are GW paints known as acrylic?

Thanks for the color advice I will be sure to give that a go, i like the idea of mixing washes. :)

Welcome again!

1) the question of which brand of paint is better is a frequent subject line around here. While most people do seem to prefer either Vallejo or Reaper paints to Games Workshop, some of the best painters here use exclusively GW paints.

2) GW, Reaper and Vallejo are all acrylic. A (very?) few painters use oils. If you don\'t know the difference, then definitely stick to acrylics! :)

Hi Bastetcat,

Thanks for the advice and the welcome :)

I have noticed some peoples work on here looks almost chalky rather than a shine, if that makes sence! Is this due to very good blending of colors or the varnish used? :)

Chalky is usually the result of poor techniques: Drybrushing, going to white as a highlight.

Flatness is a result of a final matt varnish coat.

Welcome to the boards.

I see, thanks for that :)

What colors would any of you suggest to highlight khorne beserkers, the pain color is red gore (GW) with a red ink over the top and red/brown shading. Im just not sure of the highlights. I was thinking perhaps red gore with a little yellow and maybe a touch of bleached bone.

This is my first attempt at red highlighting so any advice would be great. Thanks for all the answers so far, it really is helpful :)

actaully an orange makes a pretty good highlight for red. Mix a little blood red & blazing orange together, then straight blazing orange on just the very hot spots.

And just a note, this thread would be better in the \"Painting & Conversions\" area than the submissions. Maybe we can get a mod to move it?

destructive prince: Welcome to the forums.
I hope that you will find a lot of useful information about painting, on here, which will help you out.

Whatever you do, don\'t think we are a serious bunch on here. We\'re not!
Most of us are seriously \"Off the Map!\" and my GPS system tells me I\'m on Mars somewhere. :D

(Oh moved the thread as requested as well!)

As airhead said, highlighting with a mix of orange can work very well. If you need to highlight even more but you want to avoid a \"hot orange\" effect and don\'t want to go to pure white from fear of making the final result pink, you might want to try some Bleached Bone then.

As for your first question on \"blending\", what ever technic you adopt (wet-blending, layering, feathering), always try to thin down your paints to the constistancy of skimmed milk, and only put the necessary amount of paint in your brush to avoid rings of paint when it dries.

Good luck, and be sure to post WIP.
